Strange clutch problem

87 4runner,22re. Clutch doesn't slip and works fine disengaged and going down the road. When I push it in, there's tons of vibration 'til it kills the motor. Seems backwards I know. Any hints? TIA

Sounds like your throwout bearing is shot.

I agree with TNR. Its not backwards at all. When you push the clutch, the throwout bearing must engage the clutch pressure plate. If the throwout bearing is bad, it will not allow it to slip freely, and will try to engage the (non moving) trans to the (moving) engine. Thus killing your engine.
