Sticky RPM and surging

Alright so I have an '88 regular cab with the 2.4l 22re that is fairly new to me and i need some help. Noticed it driving home from work the other day. I was cruising along in 3rd and let my foot off the gas and instead of slowing down the truck kept right on going like it was on cruise control. Before you ask, I have the base model without cc. It doesn't do it everytime but enough to where I am concerned. Also I notice that when it is in gear and I push the clutch, to coast to stop sign for example, the engine surges, revs up and down, a few times. I'm thinking maybe a throttle position sensor. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Sounds like the dashpot (not actually on/in the dash) is sticking. Do a search for "dashpot". It may answer your questions.

I had to, the timing was perfect!

Check your dashpot like was mentioned and check for vacuum leaks.

Does is surge when the brake pedal is pressed? If so then the idle is too high. If the dashpot is sticking then this will cause the idle to stay up higher than it should be and with the brake pedal pressed it will surge.

Thanks for the replies. It must be the dashpot because I just bought brand new high performance floor mats last week! I've never even heard of a dashpot before, never the less time to go take a look.

Mine does the same thing, often too..

Never been able to figure it out. Seems to go away if I spray cleaner in the TB and scrub it.. never much gunk though.

My dashpot seems to move smoothly aswell, I even lubed it...

lol...

Lube the cable, check the spring... Check for vac leaks... Maybe there's so much gunk behind the butterfly it's holding it slightly open...
