Steering slop - when to replace gearbox

88 4Runner. I have a lot of slop in the steering wheel, where it will turn before the pitman arm begins to move. I'm guessing this is from the gearbox.

How do you "know" when it's time for a new gear box (or rebuild it)? I'm re-designing alot of my otehr steerin gto be more stout, so might as well give some attention here, too...

I am looking for the same answer as well. my truck is lifted with 33's and i have replaced EVERY thing but the drag arm itself and the steering box. I even replaced the rag joint. i have terrible tracking above 40+mph. I cant even think of taking mine on the freeway. Im actually going to go pick up a steering box from my local yard, I called and they are charging $30 bucks..... SWEET price! Planning on getting it and installing next weekend and I will post my findings here if that's okay? (sorry to hijack) I've been looking to resolve this issue for quite some time now.

I trust in both cases you have all ready adjusted the steering box to take up all the slop and it has still gotten worse.

I think less then 30mm is what Toyota allows.

Thing with a Yard one it could be as bad or worse then the one you take out

Ya that's true about the one from the yard being bad too but I have seen the one from the yard and that toy had only 150,xxx on the truck and the truck looked to be in good condition...? All i know is ANYTHING has got to be better then what i have now. Im thinking since my truck has been lifted for a long time with the 33's on it the steering box has gotten quite sloppy.?. And yes I have adjusted the steering box and it made if a little worse. it was like, instead of a loose steering wheel and being all over the road I had a tight steering wheel and was all over the road. if i hold the wheel straight i would end up in the "death wobble".

Why not update the thread you started on this issue?
