Steering Extension Placement

On my third Toy truck, first was an 84 with 2” body lift on 32x11.5 mounted on 10’s, 22 R under the hood. Second was an 82 on 31x10.5 on 10’s, 20 under the hood. My current is an 89 I’ve owned 17 years with 128,000 original miles, 3.0 V6, originally stock on 31x10.5 on 8’s. I started with a 3” suspension lift and 33x12.5 on 10’s, had to trim some, didn’t like cutting my fenders and still had some rub in a bind, so I’ve gone with a 3” body lift and purchased 2 new fenders. My issue is that I loosened the steering shaft before lifting, it steers great, retained a factory look inside, but I got an extension with the kit and new firewall plate. It seems to be fine like it is, except the cover around the steering shaft looks like it’s rubbing on something. My question is, where does that extension need to go to eliminate the rubbing and will I need to change the firewall plate?
Any tips on putting a new parking brake cable on, the front part? I can’t even find where it comes through the firewall. Thanks in advance!!

Well id say the new plate you got for the fire wall needs to be cut and put in. Only for the reason you "body lifted 3in" so you just moved your cab up from your frame obv. That new plate would allow "full" movement when you start flexing around and crap.

So the other part is a steering extension and i would throw it on for the reason of moment when your turning and hitting bumps and such.

ID say compare them, see if there is noticeable length difference for the extension. and compare the firewall plates and you should see difference. if not then idk. Maybe post a pic of the areas and parts and someone who knows the body lift lyfe will know.

Also nice truck! i dig it.

Thanks, it’s the longest I’ve owned a vehicle. I’ve pretty much decided to pull the steering and put the plate and extension in and then hope that I don’t have as much trouble getting it back in as some of the people I’ve read about. It’s not rubbing at the firewall, but probably will after adding the extension. It’s rubbing at a spot where there’s a knuckle and this piece covers the knuckle. I have a few small things to finish up on this lift, it’s been a PITA compared to the suspension lift, I’ve not lengthened the fuel fill hose, have to do that before it flexes too. So after the steering, fill hose, and putting the parking brake cable on that I’ve been avoiding, it’ll be ready to go. I’m running 33’s, but think I could stuff 35’s under it now. I kind of like the clearance with the 33’s though.
Thanks again, it’s really clean for an 89.
