starting woes

Goodmorning! It's 2:25 am here and i'm just about ready to head out door for work. My truck (which is no longer my DD since gas prices shot up) starts strong ie.,get in, turn key andit starts up. I drive it a few miles and shut her down and come out later and when I start her up again she'll crank over strong 10-20 seconds before she starts again. This happens when the engine is still warm AND when it has cooled (say after a shift at work). The engine is the venerable 22re W/ 360 k miles (89 4x4 pickup). Thanks for any guidance.

Well when was the last time you did a full tune up??

Has the fuel filter ever been changed ??

Do you drive around most of the time with the gas tank below quarter tank??

Good place to start .

You say it "turn key andit starts up" but then you say that after it sits, even to the point of getting cold, that "she'll crank over strong 10-20 seconds before she starts again". So, I'm a little confused as to whether it ever starts quickly or whether it always takes the 10-20 secs??

One thing you can try in whatever condition it usually takes 10-20 seconds to start is jump B+ and FP in check connector, turn ignition on (but don't crank it), wait 20 seconds, then crank it, and see if it starts right up. This technique runs the fuel pump for 20 seconds before trying to start. If it starts right up, the check valve in the fuel pump is leaking, and that may mean the FP sock has holes in it.
