Exclamation Starting Problems (fuel related) i think

I have a 86 4runner with thr 22re 136k miles and it all of a sudden started to have problems starting after it had been sitting for a coupile of hours. It only happened every now and then but now it it every time i let it sit. I changed the fuel filter, no luck. After it has been runnig it starts fine. but if it sits it has to turn over for minuite of so studdering and dieing, studdering and dieing, Then after that it runs good. only when it sits. I even replaced the fuel pump no luck. I am stumped need help
thanx josh

My first guess would be fuel pressure regulator...

go to the FSM link and check pressure per the manual: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...fsm/index.html

two other things that can cause this are:

1. Bad Cold Start Injector
2. Bad Water Temp Sensor (fools engine into thinking it's cold and dumps fuel via the cold start injector)

I'm interested to know if you've made any progress on this issue. My '87 4runner (22-RE) does EXACTLY the same thing. Yesterday I yanked the cold start injector out and cleaned it off, but I'm not sure if I did anything for it. The truck still starts rough when cold. I'm planning on getting the multimeter out and checking the timing switch and some other stuff tomorrow. I'll probably check the fuel pressure regulator as well.

What is the best way to test the operation of the cold start injector without the special service tool indicated in the service guide? How have you guys gone about giving the injector a good cleaning in the past? I just can't seem to convince myself that it's anything other than this injector.

spray some carb cleaner in the inlet and power it up w/ a battery. just cleaning the outside isnt going to help if its clogged from the inside. if that dont help replace it...

Yeah that's kind of what I figured...I might get on cleaning that again tomorrow. I did hit the cold start timing switch with the multimeter earlier and it looks like the resistance on the STA-STJ connection is a little high, so I might end up replacing the timing switch if I can find one and see what happens.
