i have an 88 pickup with a 22re 5 speed. now here is the problem i went out to start the truck and it would not turn over so i checked the battery and the cables going to the starter. so i took the starter out and had it rebuilt and put it back in and it started up. i went to my friends and it would not start it just buzzed like before. i put the truck in gear and rolled it back and forth a couple of times got in and it started right up. what could be happening. thanks for any info

 

I assume the bolts on the starter are installed all the way - Did the teeth on the starter look good when you replaced it? Does it ever grind when you crank it?

 

teeth are good and the bolts are all the in and no if never grinds all that you hear is a buzzing sound when you try to turn it over but if you move the truck while in gear then go to start it there is no problem

 

IMO, you should pull the starter out and seperate the armature again. Using an ohm meter, place one end on the pinion and the other on the stator (the copper part). Turn the unit and see if there is a portion that has worn past the copper. This indicates that you have a "flat spot" that causes the brushes to go to ground instead of creating the magnetic field. Sometimes you can actually see (by eye) a definite wear spot on it. This is why when you roll the truck or strike the starter, it rotates to a good spot and works great (until it stops on the flat spot again). If this is the case, you will have to replace the starter as it's not worth the hassle of trying to fix it. Hope this helps
