I'm looking to rebuild the starter on my 1994 Toyota pickup. I assume it's the original starter, because ever since I've had it, it has never been replaced. I've been looking on ebay for rebuild kits and have found a couple, but am not sure if they will work or not. The beauty about toyota starters is, they run forever. Usually all they need are new starter contacts and a new plunger, which can be had for less than $20.00...and that is dealer costs. Read this...

Then you might as well get a new plunger while your in there. Go to the following site, enter your vin, and go to the starter section you will see the plunger.

Thank you for your response. I have read that 4crawler article, but which contacts are needed? I presume the A contacts are needed x2, no?

 

My 94 pickup starts like a champ now, after using 4Crawler's A and C points in the solenoid. Take the tire off to get at the thing, it's much easier. And, remove the steering stabilizer to pull the unit out. If you have enough lift, you may be able to remove the points without taking the starter out.

Just curious why would you not at least check the brushes when your rebuilding the solenoid??

They do wear out
