Starter clicks a few times then starts?

Every so often when I go to start my truck I just get a click from the starter. If i try a few times it will usually turn over and start. I this a sign of a failing starter possibly bay wiring connections?

Sounds like the solenoid contacts in your starter are worn, this is the most common cause of problems with our starters, otherwise they're extremely well-built. Thankfully the contacts are a simple and cheap replacement. This thread should point you in the right direction:

I also recommend that if you buy the contacts from your local starter & alternator shop, to see if they'll turn your plunger on a lathe to clean up and flatten the contact, some will do this for free if you buy the replacement contacts. Should only run you about $10 for the contacts and 10 minutes to replace them.

I had same problem. I bought the contact from 4Crawler. He shipped it quickly.
It was not too hard. Although, there is a wire at the back of the alternator. Mine broke off at the connector. Now I think it is draining my battery even when the truck sits.

Becareful and take pictures taking out the starter. I had a hell of a time putting it back in. The starter rebuild was easy. Getting it out and back in was a different story.

Good luck...look at my post. It was my last project.

I found changing the starter on a 2nd gen 4runner to be quite easy. Take off passenger wheel, and the mud cover behind it, and there's the starter. A ratchet with a u joint, and my 3 foot extension, and the starter was out in about 5 minutes.

Just used normal tools and it only took a few min to get it out, take it apart, replace the contacts, and reinstall. Maybe an hour total. Hasnt clicked yet. The hot wire to the starter still needs to be replaced.
