First off, truck specs: 95 longbed, 22re with ~130k, 4wd, manual tranny.

So I went wheeling the other day with a few friends, and was crawling up a crack line that was moderately steep, slightly off-camber, and most of the way up, almost to the top, when I needed it most, the engine started to stall out whenever i got on the gas. It wouldn't idle well and bogged down whenever I stepped on the gas, but when I pushed slowly on the gas, it would be ok, sometimes. So eventually it just wouldnt keep running, so I had to back down the hill to flat ground. still had issues, but after a slight bit of revving it up and running it for awhile, it smoothed out again. Moved on using an easier line and went to the next spot. Same type of setup, medium incline, no off-camber this time, and almost immediately, it started doing the same thing again. Got it on the flat, revved it out til it was smooth, moved on, same thing on another spot that was steep and off-camber.

Gas tank was basically full, my tank skid has a mild dent on it but nothing that I think would affect the pickup, obviously fuel injected. Only thing I think it could be would be the fuel filter, unsure whether or not its original or not. Id change it but I don't know when I'll have the time with school this quarter, plus I hear on some 22res it can be a reaaaallll pain in the @$$. Any ideas guys, Im stumped.

my 1st thoughts would be to change the fuel filter and see if it happens again. I'm not for sure on your truck but my mustang had a "sock" type screen attached to the bottom of the fuel pump inside the tank, that may be something to check on if the filter doesn't help.

i'd try the fuel filter first. most manufacturers say theyre a lifetime item, but i've found that after about 100k on most vehicles you can tell the difference after changing it.

 

Another vote for the fuel filter. A "lifetime item" means replacement around 100,000 miles. They don't expect anyone to keep a new car that long so they mean that when you buy it new you should never have to repllace it if you trade later.

 

Yeah, fuel filter for the 22re can be a huge PITA. Was the whole reason I put the 1" body spacers on my rnr lol...
