Thanks for the link, lol, i think thats where i got one of the pics from. But wow, i feel sorry for people in California. I honestly don't know too much about vacuum lines, but i've tried to get this engine back to original as possible, but sometimes I think im just blowing smoke because of my lack of experience and proper training.

Thanks, thats about the most useful site i've ever seen. Unless i see it done i will never get it right. ok, ill try that tomorrow, if i still have hoses. The least i can do is check it and mark off what i need.

 

R4G1NG_BU11, I recommend taking the vacuum line off the brake booster (large 1" hose that runs back to intake manifold) and sealing it off well. If your engine idles/runs better, then you most likely have a vacuum leak in the booster diaphragm. You might also want to test the check valve in that hose (plastic one-way valve) to see if it is working. I believe this valve stops air from leaking back into the booster from the manifold when vacuum is low. Let your truck run for 20 seconds in park to build vacuum. Shut it off. After 60 seconds, push on the brakes. Your brake pedal should be easy to push down since there is still vacuum available. If the pedal is unusually stiff, then you definitely have a significant leak. This leak would make cause your truck to idle poorly or even cut off at idle.

The other area to look at is the MAF/VAF and filter in the intake. I had a MAF/VAF that caused similar issue on a 5 speed. Turned out that the metal coil that provides physical resistance to the wiper had broken. There are tons of threads that show you how to test the MAF/VAF using a multi-meter.

@ ahickman, thanks for the info. I took off and plugged the 1"hose, it idled the same, but reacted a little different when I let off the gas (it tried to stall every time) but it never did. I also did the 20 sec, and 60 sec test. It was easy to press the brake about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way, then its pretty difficult to press. So I'm thinking the hose is dry rotted so ill replace it later this week, so my next guess would be the maf.

 

Which side did you block off? I should have recommended that you block off the manifold port that feeds the hose connected to the brake booster.

 

Whoops, lol. I should have thought of that. Well after I get back from the store ill do it. I guess I should make down and think about both ends of a problem before I think its fixed.

I can't work on my truck during the weekend, I barely have enough time to get to and from jobs. I won't have any time until Monday.

 

So its brake booster for sure. Hit the brakes hard today and it stalled instantly. Also had my exhaust fall off too, so i'll kill two birds with one stone since the place im going will have the parts for the brake booster. Everything is so dry rotted that the hoses are cracked on the bends.

im actually happy to be able to fix something, even though other things are going wrong now, if its not one thing its another. but how i treat my truck i can only expect these parts to last so long.

At last! I fixed the stalling issue. I ended up replacing all of the larger vacuum lines and i found a couple of intake hoses at the junkyard in Fredricksburg. Although, if i spin out, it stalls. Don't really care though because my truck now starts perfectly fine, and idles smooth for the first time since i got it.
