Anyone ever tried to refinish a set of sr5 wheels. Mine are in pretty bad shape with clear coat peeling off and hardly any shine left. Any products out there from eastwood or someone else that might help me do this and what might be involved. I really hate to pay $75.00 a wheel to have them refinished if i can do it my sely. Any ideas?

 

there is a thread on here recently of i guy who had the inner parts beadblasted, and polished up all the other parts, then got them all powdercoated clear, looked great

 

You might try using a metal stripper [to get of all traces of road/wax crap] then go at the wheel with one of those polish balls on a drill. hit it with a rattle can of clear coat then a few days later a good quality wax. Don't know what the results would be though... Turtle wax used to sell a chrome restorer polish that was supposed to be good on alum. wheels...
The other option would be to talk to the refinish shop about a price break to do the set...

take them bad boys up to Jeremy (callmej) and he will hook you up. He can blast um, powdercoat them, make them look better then brand new and his prices and work are THE BEST around. Check out his thread and shoot him a PM. He will take care of you. Not sure where ruffin, NC is but you could always drive up to VA to save a little bit on shippin.

Working on a set right now. Sounds like ours look about the same. Been using 1,2,and 3 aught steelwool to get rid of the leftover clear. After that itll be to the paint booth with some good clear and then polish time. Good luck on yours.

So all you are going to do is use the steel wool then polish then clear?

 

If they are all pitted and dinged its a different story. Mine are fine except oxidizing and peeling clear. Some wheels that are totally wasted need the full treatment but its hard to get back to that cool finish after blasting. Im sure there are other ways but Ive done them this way before, so yea a lot of elbow grease and time but I think its worth it. Thanks for the correction Cebby.

 

So after the steel wool they have that grey aluminum look and then you have them cleared. So what type of polish? Can you use that mothers ball?

 

Exactly. We use Mothers aluminum polish around the shop. Ive never used the Mothers ball. Always used polishing rags instead, being the cheaper option, but it looks cool. Give it a whirl and let us know. Remember to use the finer wool for as much as you can. Be careful with the coarse stuff.
