sr5 cluster issues

okay, i have a base model 92 2wd short box standard cab. 22re and 5 speed. bought a 93 sr5 4x4 4 cyl cluster on ebay, put it in with the oil sending unit. no oil gauge working, and the tach would read 2700...even if the truck wasnt on but the ignition was. well, i found an 89-91 (mech speedo) sr5 2wd 6 cyl cluster in the boneyard and swapped the outer gauge faces (looks better) and the whole oil gauge. that works now. the tach from it does the same thing. only it reads 3000. so i put mine back in, since atleast its tuned for a 4 cyl, and am thinking that its got to be something on the trucks wiring. i put a summit coil on, and dont remember if i hooked the igniter back up. and some wiring under the dash may be messed since it had a hackjob stereo installed when i got it. truck runs great, not really any electrical issues on it....but id love to have a workin tach. any help would be awesome. thanks guys. by the way, if anybody wants the parts cluster or certain gauges from it let me know.

You tried 2 different tachs, and neither work? And you have a rigged coil/igniter? Yep, I'd suspect a "wiring" problem! Put the original coil/igniter back on it, if you still have it. The '92 wiring harness should support the tach.

weird thing is, it didnt work before i replaced the coil. and i cant figure out why it would read about 2700 if the engine is off.

If it reads 2700rpm whenever the ignition is on, it's not getting the correct input. That coil/igniter rig is suspect!
