squeaking noise
my '88 4runner makes a squeaking noise in 1st and 2nd gear, until i shift in to 3rd or reach 25mph......any ideas?
sounds like it's coming from the mid section of the truck, maybe the front of the rear driveshaft. im not too sure. it stops when i press on the clutch, and doesnt happen if i throw the truck in neutral.

A friend said it might be the u-joint. I'm just going to take the grease gun and pack grease wherever it can go and I will also check the u-joint.
This is the first Yota I've ever owned, and second 4x4 so I don't know much about much in the truck department. I normally just stick to anything with a Buick 3800.

does it do it in reverse?
if yes, worse?
when my rear diff U-Joint devoloped a dry, rusty cap, it was obnoxiously loud in reverse
I too will almost garantee you it's just a U-Joint
of course, I say "it's just a U-Joint" like it's an easy fix... if they're old and stubborn to come out like mine were, set yourself a good 2 of 3 hours aside if you want to replace both of them on the rear drive shaft...
just like everything else on my 292k mile PU, I honestly think they were originals too

Original shocks? No way! You've got to be mistaken. Either that, or you're so used to floating around like a boat you don't realize the difference.

I was just thinking that to myself yesterday actually as I teeter-totted over some rail-road tracks
but I'm waiting will I install all the new suspention compnents before I put new, taller ones on
and when I do, I'll post pics of the "TOYOTA" stamped right on them, and a date if there's one too! I've seen the "TOYOTA" stamped on them, but I haven't looked for a date...

Ah, I see. I guess I can't say anything, though. My Peugeot feels like a bass boat on Lake Superior. Struts aren't cheap for this puppy. <<<my hold up.

this thing has factory everything. terrible home paint job. interior is beat to hell. crappy bondo job over the fenders but i didnt see (or hear) any bodywork anywhere else. wiring exposed all over the place. 174,000 miles and the thing runs great. no check engine light on the dash or anything. the frame has no rot. i picked it up for $600 the other day. once i fix the horn it will pass a NH inspection, i guess thats all that matters right? i'm probably not going to lift it and just stick to moderate trails and whatnot. i'm just glad to finally be in a toyota 4x4 after being able to go anywhere in my buddy's stock '89 pickup.
i just brought it down a trail and train tracks with 2 feet of snow on them, down a flight of stairs, and over a few snowbanks to test it out. went without a problem.
a little less than 1/2" of tread is sticking out past the fenders, do you guys think that would be an inspection problem?
any simple or inexpensive mods you guys recommend?

somewhat, actually! i barely noticed it on the ride home
i'd get under the truck but it's like 28 degrees, pitch black, and about to snow. i cant wait for winter to end so i can keep the top off until august.

Fix the squeak = simple, inexpensive mod.....sorry, it was a joke.
I think I'd start making it reliable first. You know, check fluids...change if necessary, air filter, plugs, rotor/cap, valve check/adjustment......the usual tune up stuff, inspect the drivetrain, repack wheel bearings, check steering components, fix them exposed wires, just whatever to make it solid. That way when you go to making modifications you're not building on something that may fail because the time wasn't taken to look it all over from the start. But, that's just me. Besides, after having looked it all over, you may be spending some money just in that department.
As for the squeak, I assume you lubed the uj's. And, now it is quieter? Well, you may have pinpointed the problem right there. The UJ may be beyond simply greasing it. It's probably rather shot and greasing it just quietened it down. You ought to replace it. And, check all the others while you're at it.
Pull the driveshaft down and check the rotation. UJ's should feel smooth and not at all sticky or stiff. BTW, if/when you did grease them, did you happen to see any old grease and/or rust being pushed out of the caps?
