Question speedometer woes....

first off, i wanna say, hi all, first post, so bear with me...

Thought i broke another speedometer cable last weekend. i pulled the cable and gear out of the transfer case, and both looked good, and when i turned the cable and gear by hand, the speedo "Bounced". i put everything back together, and took the truck on a test drive. the speedo worked up until about 15-20 mph. i pulled it into the school shop, and pulled the dash board completely out last night, and checked the other end of the cable. it looked fine, was connected, and even turned when i turned the other end. so, after a large amount of frustration, i put it all back together, and decided to sleep on it. as i was leaving the school, i glanced down at the gauge cluster...much to my suprise, the speedo was working! I lost mucho sleep trying to figure out what i did to make it work again, but im at a loss...any of ya'll got any idea?
