Speedometer Not working Properly

Hello everyone, I have a 94 toyota pickup 4x4 22re, recently the speedometer does not work till about 1-3 miles don the road. It has never not kicked back in. Whats controls the speedometer or where does it go? Thanks

You have the classic signs of a failing VSS1. It plugs into the back of the transfer case. Remove one bolt and gently wiggle it out. The replacement doesn't come with the drive gear, so don't lose it.
