Speedeometer inop ?

My speedo is not working and obviously thats making my o/d light flash... does a 1990 v6 4x4 4runner have a VSS or is it just a cable? I've checked the back of the intrument cluster all seems secure...... anyone ever have this problem? The cable goes to the back of the T-case and screws in correct? any help appreciated!

Trucks got 5" supsenion 3" body lift.... could some wire been stretched or something?

The cable could be snapped somewhere inline..
Id try replacing that...

yeah a 90 should be cable driven, and the only purpose of the cable is to run the speedometer (well, and the odometer ), so if the speedometer's not working at all, the cable's just fubar

but if it's an auto, there should be some sensors, but I can't say for sure, as mine's a manual but that's strange that the O/D light's flashing too, cause the speedometer unit that the cable hooks too is completely sparated from the electronics; I know this cause I just had one pulled apart

but just maybe... that's what these 2 screws are for?

With cable driven speedometers, the speedometer creates a speed signal which is fed to the ECU.

Here's a technical article (which someone referred to a couple months back) which discusses speed sensors and cable drive speedos:

Until you get it fixed:

20 miles per hour: 2nd gear @ ~2100 RPM
35 miles per hour: 3rd gear @ ~2500-2600 RPM
40 miles per hour: 4th gear @ ~2200 RPM, or 3rd @ 3k
55 miles per hour: 5th gear @ ~2500 RPM, or 4th @ 3k
65 miles per hour: 5th gear @ ~2900-3k
75 miles per hour: 5th gear @ ~3100-3200

For a while my speedo kept crapping out and I just memorized these combinations when it was working.

This may be different with your lift and all that and etc, but it worked for me.

2nd through 5th! Some people...

But seriously, good point, my stock (R150F) gears are probably a bit off from what he might be running with his lift and all that and etc.
