Specific rear window problem

I completely took the car apart trying to figure out why it wouldnt work, but i found out that when i ground the center wire from the switch in the consol, then pressed the button, it worked perfectly. So then i moved down that wire and i traced it (sort of... it goes into a bundle.. then i found another wire that goes to the lock button) to the lock button, and when i grounded a certain wire on the lock button it worked. and i messed around and around with it, and if i grounded the wires comming out of the lock switch the window would work, but no matter what i do i cant get it to work without an external ground. For now i stuffed wire into one of the wire connections, and i grounded it to the chassis. But i would like i fix the circuit

Power (?) -->-- up/down switch -->-- lock switch -->-- rear window...

but where is the *real* ground? Or do i have this wrong?
