"Spanner" Tool

Putting in a new rear 3rd member and I gotta torque down the spanner rings to load the bearings. Does Toyota sell a special tool for this? Or should I just fab one?

If I'm thinking correctly your talking about the threaded rings that have the slots in them all over? The shop that set mine up just used a hammer and a brass drift.

I could be thinkin the wrong thing though.

Yeah that's the thing... I don't like the idea of tightening it with impulse force however...

The guy that did mine is the only one in the area I live in anyone will trust with differentials or any kind of gearing, setup, etc...

Didn't bother me he did it that way. Your not torque'n the rings to specific ft-lbs, your just tightning them up until you get the correct amount of preload.

Zuk built his own "spanner tool". See his web site listed above, and you'll see he actually built a couple.

I did a google and couldn't seem to find a heavy duty spanner tool so I pm'd RustBucket and recommended he just make a fast one from the info shown about 3/4 down this link

RustBucket--if you can't weld the bolt head in place then thread the hole and just tight the bolt down.


86Original---I see in your sig that you "removed the napo coil"....got new leafs?

When I wheeled Blanca, it seemed like I wasn't getting the compression out of the coils that I wanted. Took them off and am experimenting the with newer (& longer) AirLift RideControl bags. Have a feeling that I'll be getting some new leaves before next spring.

Yeah I'm just gonna weld a 1/2" socket in there rather than a bolt head. I've got welding class tomorrow evening so I'll make that along with a tool for taking off the pinion bolt and something to hold the crankshaft on the 22re we've got on a stand to get off a stubborn crank bolt.
