take care of what you got is the best solution. it will take care of you.
This is un-arguable.

But, ..... It's been entertaining, why end it? haha. JK, I can see why.. I sensed, the first time reading that title, "Oh boy, here we go!"

But hey, I've seen some good arguments and factoids in this thread.... not all bad, right?

I got 22 strictly highway one trip. In my 22r-te. driving 55, and i was EASY on it, dont think i hardly hit any boost. But most of the time with my driving style (not to incredibly aggressive but once in a while) i get 16-19.

Edit: After I posted and looked at the title I thought I posted in the wrong section for a second. I'd say a little off topic.

i love my 3vze! blows the doors off my old 22re. i can pass on the highway with ease instead of crawling in the slow lane. 5th gear uphill into wind and still accelerating... try that in a 22re... just saying

Definetly some good points in this thread.

I went and found a "4wheeler" magazine from 1988 and took a pic of this ad.

I did that coming back from West Virginia to PA. Mountainous, yes. But descending from 3000ft to around sea level. That's my best tank so far. I was way to excited about it. Sorry to continue the threadjack, but couldn't resist.

Just to make it relevant, I got no beef with 3.slows. I just can't afford the decreased mileage on my poor man's budget. Can barely afford a 22re 4x4 as it stands!

i completely agree with vudujoose! i have a 1995 toyota 4runner with the 3VZE and everyone keeps telling me to do the swap or that it sucks! my goal with this car is to rebuild it completely and race baja in class 7. the engine is going to be rebuilt and the heads are going to be ported. im going to aim for 300hp and i know i could possibly do it. once i get all my parts together i will make a build thread and show people what the 2nd gen 4Runner is capable of doing!

I would like to see the complete articles those cute little out-of-context quotes were pulled from.

It's an old ad.

The truck was top end at the time.

It's an advertisement, and an old one at that, but the statements were not necessarily 'out of context'. It was a great engine in its time.

I don't remember any ads bragging about the 22R's power.

They absolutely are. For example:

"This 3.0 V6 is the strongest we've tested so far."

What was it being compared to? Other Toyota sixes? Other manufacturer's sixes? Other 3.0L sixes? Other Toyota 3.0L sixes? V6s? How many others? Which ones? Did the articles have any criticisms? Was this before anyone knew about the head gasket problem? Since the 3VZE was sparkly-new for '88, I'm guessing it was. It's as dubious as "best in initial quality," which says nothing about how good a vehicle actually is beyond the low mileage a press vehicle sees...which what those magazine writers would have tested.

Whether a vehicle is good or not, the ad department intentionally cherry-picks glowing praise out of context simply to make the vehicle appealing to buyers. It's not illegal because someone actually said the words. It's misleading because you don't get the whole story.

That magazine came out in 1988, the same year the 3vze was first introduced. They didn't realize that the head gasket problem existed until years later. And if they are saying it is the strongest v6 they've tested, it probably means it is the best among small trucks like the Ranger, S10, Mighty Max, etc. They wouldn't test trucks, cars, whatever in the same catagory. Also, the Toyota VZ engines were (to my knowledge, I may have to research this) the first v6 engine they ever produced.

Toyota isn't going to put negative claims in their ads. If they did, no one would buy their vehicles. It is misleading, but it is one of those things you have to test out on your own to get the whole truth,

Congratulations "Thatguy" You win at the internet. You must be so proud.

You're completely right all of you, I make up random figures to post on the toyota forum. Its a hobby of mine....
You take the one piece of info from my initial post that you disbelieve for whatever reason and proceed to blow this out of proportion.
Turns out there is more bashing of the 2.4 in here than building of the 3.0. Was simply trying to highlight some good points on both motors but hell with it.

The mileage I have stated came out of my 87 runner with stock size tires running premium gasoline across the state of Texas between. Take it or leave it tough guys.

Off topic? Talking about the pros and cons of the 3vze vs, the alternate engine option available in the trucks it comes in is off topic?

Enjoy the squabbling over mpg figures gentlemen.
I'm done.
Cheers.
