My girlfriend's family has a ranch, which is the main reason I'm building my 4Runner up a bit. Rocks, hills, snow in winter, and a couple of water crossings that are a bit deep.

I took a look at the ARB snorkel, and while it looks very nice and polished, it seems it would be fairly simple to make one myself for a hell of a lot less than $400. Has anyone done this?

What else needs to be done to waterproof it through water that would end up just a little over the hood?

 

do some searching before you ask a question like that. There is tons of information about good snorkels, some that have been built custom as well as some ARB installs.

 

Just this weekend I snorkeled mine into my cab. Was pretty simple to do really, just removed the fender cut a nice round hole and used a rubber 3" flex pipe and ran it along the innner frame member and cut another hole and piped it into the cab up under the dash beside the top of the fuse panel and other electricals. I didn't take any pics. and I'm not pulling my fender for any (was a pain to get lined up right for the door to work) I used the original tube from the air box and chaulked it into place in the air box and used a rubber tape and seam sealer to seal the hole around the pipe into the cab. I'll put up a pic from under the hood a little later.

How does the electrical system react to being immersed? Any of that need to be sealed?

 

I haven't yet tried it out, just finished it up yesterday. I didn't install it to intentionally go into water that deep but twice in the last month I've hit deeper than expected holes and I've had my engine stall out due to water ingestion, second time it made it into the cylinders so I figured it's time to do something. I've done many other fairly deep (top of bumper) crossings and never had an electrical issue but I'm sure the dist. and fuse block should be sealed as well as other parts. I plan on looking into it myself and do what others suggest.

 

In this pic. right at the front edge of the wall of water I'm pushing there is a 12" drop that wasn't there before, needless to say this swamped me good, nothing made it to the cylinders though but it screwed my exhaust, when it stalls out that exhaust becomes a vacuum and sucks everything in there.

 

Dude thats a pretty sick pic. What you doing to avoid the vaccum problem for the exhaust?

 

Snorkeling it so I don't swamp it when in water...lol... Not to sure wewre I'm heading with the exhaust vac. problem was thinking maybe the old tractor type of flap, it wouldn't be water tight but it would definately keep alot of crap out.
