BG 4runner

Hi everyone! this is my first post, but ive been coming here for tech help for quite a while.
So I just got done with a project on my 89 4runner with a 22re, and I'm having some issues.
The project started out as just a head gasket replacement, but ended up turning into getting the head rebuilt with a valve job, machine work, and new cam.
Now that everything is buttoned back up and running, I noticed that when it warms up there's some smoke/steam coming from the engine compartment noticeable only when I'm stopped, but the temp gauge hasn't gone above normal at all. I haven't been able to pinpoint the source of the smoke yet, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas.

EDIT: this morning it didn't put out any smoke, so I'm wondering if it was just burning off any spilled fluids in the engine compartment that I didn't get wiped up...

You can usually tell what kind of smoke it is by the way it smells. Steam with antifreeze in it has a distinctive smell, so does burning oil.
It's possible that it's just oil from your recent work, but smoking under the hood is never a good thing, if it continues, I'd check it out. Maybe a leaking valve cover gasket, loose cooling hose, maybe a pinhole in the radiator.

Id spray it down good with degreaser and take it to the car wash then see how it goes.just like george runner said prob just some spilled oil burning off or spilled antifreeze from the hg replacement when you pulled the head.new exhaust gaskets will kinda smoke a bit and smell also the first couple time they get hot.

Thanks, I didn't think about the exhaust gasket, that could have been it too. I haven't had a problem with it since the first couple times, but I was just panicking because overheating is what caused the original problems that required getting the head worked on.
