Hey guys,

I have a 1994 pickup with a 22re. The motor has been recently rebuilt. LC pistons, rings head was pressure checked. New head gasket, all new gaskets. New valve seals.
I also have egr system removed.

Before and after the rebuild the truck smokes. Alot. The plugs were fouling from so much oil.
I have done everything I can think of minus a new motor. I dont know if the head is bad.
Compression on all cylinders is perfect, have not done a leak down test.
I cannot get truck to stop smoking. It is a white/blue oil smoke.
Also when I unplug MAF it idles smooth but when hooked up it has a slight miss.

If anyone has any recommendations it would be much appreciated.

You have several problems, the most concerning of which (in my mind) is that when you unplug the air flow meter, the truck keeps running. The AFM (you don't have a MAF- mass air flow sensor, so keep that in your head) should keep the circuit opening relay turned on, thus keeping the fuel pump on and fuel flowing but unplugging it should cause the truck to die since the fuel pump shouldn't keep running. That's enough to make me wonder about everything else you claim, however....

As for the smoking, a few things can cause that:
1) blowby- maybe the rings haven't seated yet: possible that the cylinder honing wasn't done correctly or you're using an incorrect oil - no synthetic for break-in; follow break-in procedures too.
2) valve seals- maybe the old valves were worn and the new seals aren't sealing.
3) crankcase ventilation (PCV) isn't working properly- you have two "hoses" connected to the valve cover itself, one of which lets "fresh" air into the crankcase and the other lets the blowby pass through the PCV valve into the intake to be burned.
4) missing / damaged baffle or gasket in the valve cover- can let oil spray into the intake through the PCV system.
5) too much oil in the crankcase- could cause oil to be forced around the rings thus smoking; could cause excessive oil "atomization" which then passes through the PCV and makes smoke.

Beyond that, who knows?

Well I finally got some time to work on my yota today. I put new K&N filters on the valve cover. We I started the truck smoke was pouring out of front filter.
I pulled the valve cover and there was a white mess in the top of the cover. Changed oil, water in oil. Well the head gasket has about 4 miles on it. The head is old, 130000 miles old. so Im thinking its either cracked or valve guides are bad..... We shall see soon

 

Did you replace the timing cover when you did the headgasket? Why did you rebuild before? Was the head checked for trueness and that it wasn't warped? Could be a cracked head as well. Bad valve guides will not cause water to be in the oil.

 

I did have the head checked. It was decked before the shop told me.
I had a bad head gasket and found #1 piston was missing a piece. So thats why i put new rings/pistons in it. I think my guides are bad due to excessive smoke and black dirty oily buildup on sparkplugs. I also think head is toast because of water in oil.

 

I used same timing cover but if i do the head I and putting a new one on this time. New head, head bolts, timimg cover. It has the dual row timing chain with the metal guides. timing cover is not worn thru

 

check the idle up valve for power steering. If the valve is bad, it will suck in the power steering fluid into the intake. Is there any visible oil residue inside the intake plenum?

 

yeah there was oil in plenum. replace pcv valve. then started capping vacuum lines till i removed the egr system.

i will check the idle up valve.

I just had my engine rebuilt and a t3/t4 Turbo put on and the PCV valve grommet going into the valve cover was broken so it was leaking a little oil next day I replaced the grommet and PCV valve and it smoked a lot! Blue smoke. I pulled out the PCV valve and left the hole open on the valve cover and it quit smoking then I blocked off the hose going.g over to the intake manifold. It leaks oil out the top of the valve cover now and it doesn't seem to run the best so what kind.d of setup are you guys doing.g? 2 breather filters on the valve cover? Idk what to do anymore
