Would sidedrafts be worth it on a 22r, iv been looking at them on lg engineering iv got a two barrel weber carb right now. They seem like a good choice if your a speed demon lol

I have a set of dual sidedrafts on a L20b Datsun motor. Run great in my Datsun 510. But I have heard that they are no good for a 4x4 not sure why.. Could someone explain this?

 

i think it has something to do with the angles a 4x4 would operate at...hills etc, hence why fuel injection and propane is nice.

 

Will mine is 2wd though i live out in the country so sometimes ill take it out were it shouldn't be, but how much of a hp difference would you think it would make ?

 

Sidedrafts work fine on 4x4 Toyota trucks as long as you use spring-loaded needle and seat assemblies and properly adjust your float levels. I have used Mikunis when I raced my truck off-road and now run Webers. I have never had a problem them either brand.

 

yes , highter RPM they work great .. there fine if your racing and have your foot on the throttle all the time , but for off camber situations and when your ideling (most recreational 4X4ing) , they dont work well at all !

The reason most people say sidedrafts are only good for high RPM / racing applications is because most mechanics do not know how to set them up or properly adjust them. I have setup Mikunis and Webers for more years then I care to remember and when someone brings me a vehicle that will not work right it is because the carbs were never setup / adjusted for the intended use 99% of the time. I would agree with Slacker that if you are rock crawling all of the time, the sidedrafts would be the wrong carbs to choose but I can run my engine down to 650-700 RPM and get excellent response when I apply a little throttle and without hesitation or sputtering. In off-camber situations the float levels and needle / seats cause most of the problems and this problem can be solved by adjusting the float levels to compensate for this condition and using the proper type and size needle / seat assemblies. Mikuni and Weber sidedraft carbs are modular in design like most Holley carbs and you can build the carbs in many configurations to meet the need of your vehicles intended use.

 

I love the sidedrafts on my '81. Never had a problem in off camber and made a pretty big diff in top end power. Throttle response is a little snappier than the 32/36 offy dual plane setup I had previous as well.

That being said, I wouldn't go that route unless you were doing a mid or upper range cam, bigger valves, good headers and exhaust, ect. On a stock-ish 22r you'd just dump a ton of gas and get little gain IMO.
