hot dang! 3 22r builds in a year!!!!

well i picked up an 89 4runner that the timing chain wore through the waterpump housing so instead of fixing the cover im just gonna build it up nice.
what i kinda had in mind was a fuel efficient 22re (seeing as the first two are everything but), engnbldr street head, mild cam, header/ exhaust and maybe a different intake setup. smog is not an issue cause im in central oregon so im gonna ditch all the smog bs. heres a few pictures of the first two builds and the third picture is from the current build (im planning on doing a write up on it).
22/20r hybrid with dual sidedrafts oversized valves header cam 50. over on the pistons.
22r with offenhauser intake weber street head and header
giant pile of poo. efi scares me but i should be able to turn this thing into something good. lemme know what you think.

by the way who on here has a 22re mated to an automatic transmission? how does it perform?

The general concensus, is that the 22re mated to the auto is turrible.
An underpowered 4 cylinder mated to an auto with an overdrive that's much too high.

Toyota EFI is nothing like the early Ford and Chevy EFI and it's nightmares you might be thinking of...

Just keep it EFI and learn how to pull the codes and you'll be alright.

All you need is a paper clip and jump Te to E1. The same terminals you jump to set the base timing with.

IIRC, it disables the automatic altitude compensator EFI has. If you don't jump the two, I aint gonna say it won't run, but others have reported screwy timing.

yeah, im seriously thinking about ditching the auto, i found a 5speed donor truck for very reasonable but its a 3.0 so i would have to find a r151 bell housing. pain in the but, as for the efi im excited to try and mess with it, and the hybrid motor i am rocking just not in the runner hahaha i love having 3 toyota trucks!!!!!! each one is so very different

Not when you use the size tire SPECIFIED by Toyota.

9 outta 10 Toyota AT trucks have LOWER gears than manuals came with.

This is NO excuse to put a bigger tire on.

Where auto's pay off is in sand and mud. IMO, it's way better to over gear in those situations than "ditch" the AT for a 5 speed... The 1st time you mash the clutch in on sand, you'll know why.

Also, do not get the H (hydraulic) case V6's came with confused to the f 4 cylinders come with.

Don't dismiss it, read it. Like the owners manual and a FSM or Chiltons.

Toyota's don't fair well with the backyard, shade tree mechanic mentality.

When you put a Toyota together it should be the right way the 1st time, and with as much stock OEM parts your wallet will allow.

Salvage OEM parts are higher quality than brand new aftermarket parts.

I've never had a problem with my 22re. It's built amazingly well. Now that I think about it, the only major work I did to the motor was the headgakset. The only time I EVER got a CEL was when I bought the truck with it. Replaced the o2 sensors and have NEVER had a check engine light in over five years of ownership. Kinda makes me feel bad about pulling it in favor of a more powerful replacement. Sortof.

Those are cool, though.
