My concern...
http://www.hitchestogo.com/Toyota_Hitches.htm
at that site, a list of hitches shows a different code for 4runners than trucks. im not sure why this is. can anyone help me understand? the one for sale is the 84-95 hitch my only thought is that the 4runner has a very specific height to sit under the smooth bumper??

JC Whitney had the best "shipped" price on new trailer hitches when I was looking for an '89 pickup truck last summer. Sign up for their email list and you'll get coupon codes for free shipping, etc. I keep a hotmail account for these type of things. The brackets that attach the hitch to the frame need to match up exactly. With the cost for shipping heavy items, you'll be sorry if you have to send anything back for refund. Order a hitch for a 4runner and you'll get one that fits for sure.
There are quite a few 4runners in the local junkyards here. A lot of them have the factory hitches. You should be able to get a deal if price is a big concern. Some wire brushing, a bit of sanding, and a coat of rattle-can black paint = good to go looking brand new.
I pull a 2600lb boat/trailer combo. My 4runner has the SR5 package with hitch and upgraded brakes. The weight limit is 3500lbs, with a 350lb tounge weight limit. I put on downey HD springs to cure the butt sag and handle the extra weight. I put manual hubs on the front so that I could do 2wd low when pulling the boat up the launch ramp.
My 3.0 blew a head gasket after about 15 trips up to a lake about 25 miiles from home. I was at 226K, so I took the opportunity to do a 3.4 conversion. In other words, if you pull any kind of significant weight and the motor is old, expect that you'll be doing some repairs sooner than later. If you have an auto transmission, install a big transmission cooler to keep the trans happy.
If you don't have the upgraded brakes, I recommend trailer surge brakes if you are going to pull more than 1500lbs. It makes a world of difference on my trailer, even though I have the tow package. Well worth the extra cost.

Thanks for the tips, the main question is due to the fact that someone has a hitch in the classifieds cheep and i wanted to know if it would adapt. The 4runner would not be towing often but the occasional utility trailer, the only trailer i tow often is my single jet ski, and that has no problem behind my wrangler off a bumper hitch heh
anyways, I know they manufacture a 4runner hitch specifically, anyone know if the truck one wont work?

I would watch for differences where the hitch brackets bolt up to the frame. I know that on 1st gen 4Runners the body mounts get in the way of the mounting brackets of the hitch and/or bumper. There has to be a slot cut into the mounting brackets to clear the body mount. This slot would be absent on a 2nd gen pickup hitch because the bed mount doesn't come down the side of the frame like it does on a 4Runner. This maybe totally different on 2nd gen 4Runners and 3rd gen pickups. I hope this helps cause I typed way too much...

Really just how hard is it to crawl under your vehicle and look at and measure things .
Then you know the sizes you have .
then when one comes around at a good price you have an idea if it will work.
If it is for a Toyota 4Runner or Pick up the only major difference will be in how it attaches. ( Brackets)
T-100 and Tundras have a wider frame.
If a company lists different part numbers for different vehicles for the same weight class hitch it is a good bet they are different.
Then you also need to know is it made to fit with the stock bumper
The difference between the 92 pick up bumper and the 4runner bumper tell me it won`t interchange .
Having installed and built hitches over the years it is so much easier just to get the correct one.
If you need to pay someone to modify the wrong one you thought you got the great deal on.
