shock help

Hey ive searched the forums for an answer to these questions but i cant find any

i just bought some sky jacker shocks and when i got them they wernt all springy like i thought they whould be. instead i can compress them and strech them out with my bare hands. is it suppossed to be like this? and also what is a good way to fit the new bushings through the holes in the rear shocks? that job is a pain in the butt

theyre not supposed to spring out. they should however offer resistance to your pushing. the more resistance the stiffer the shocks.

I just did my fronts last week and after 94k miles the shocks were pretty worn out, and didnt offer a whole lot of resistance, especially compared to the stiff rancho 5000's i replaced em with.

wel to be more specific about the shocks they are ment for a 3 to 4 inch lift

Monotube shocks will "spring out".
Most twin tube do not

Oh - shock absorbers dont "absorb shock" - the British term is much better - DAMPER

Shocks "dampen" the oscillation (aka "boing") of the springs

the shocks do not hold the weight of your car, springs do.

torsion bars up front and rear leaf springs provide the support, without the shocks your truck would be like a bucking bronco.

If these shocks are ment for a 3-4" lift are you sure they will work for your application?
Do you have any lift?

Gas pressure shocks will "spring out" but plain old hydraulic shocks will not. For example my old KYB Gas-A-Just shocks would fully extend with no weight on them. My current Rancho (5000 and now 9000) shocks are simple hydraulic shocks and they do not extend by themselves. A plain old shock is just a tube full of oil with a piston inside and all they do is damped oscillations. A gas filled shock has an internal reservoir that holds gas under pressure to reduce foaming in the oil during high speed use. That gas expands and forces the shock rod out with no load on the shock.

you can have your springs re-arched at a spring shop. it cost me $175.00, but that was 10-12 years ago.
