Shifter boot. Loud, smelly, need fixed.

I have an 87 runner that had a 2" body lift.

The previous owners basically threw some rubber together to cover the hole.

I purchased the rubber boot and aluminum trim piece and none if it fits together right.

I can get it all together but its so snug that you would need to hold it in gear or it would pop out due to pressure from rubber.

I've read threads here and there and everybody else seems to find the answer for their problem....

I saw one that said possibly wrong shift stick,,, so I grinded down the trim. Didn't work.

One guy said that his shifter was installed backwards... on mine that doesn't even seem possible for driving.

Please help, its raining like crazy and id like to get rid of this hole.

Thanks.

Each transmission takes a different rubber boot. There designed to fit the style of transmission and Transfercase.

If you left the Body Lift then it's gonna be hard to retain the boot anyways. That boot wasn't designed to work with a body lift. Changing the
Location of shifters on the boot will cause the boot to bind up the shifters. Resulting in poping out of gear

I had the popping out of gear issue on my 89 with a 1.5" body lift. The rubber boot on mine had 2 layers of rubber. I cut the inner layer about 2 inches away from the center hole. Basically to make the shifter hole bigger

my truck had that issue when i bought it.

part of the fix involved cutting a piece out of the metal trim, that holds the boot down, and using sheet metal screws to put it all back together again.

toyota made several different versions of the w56 trans, and i think that forward shift vs. top shift versions of the trans used different boots and possibly even different cab tunnel configurations... so the boot that you bought probably doesn't match your cab tunnel and/or the trans that you have.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I did remove the body lift.

Red face

I don`t even try

last I tried to get those from the dealer they were discontinued

just figure out what size boots you need and buy them where you buy things like that Summit Racing etc.

I have pretty much replaced all mine that way 87 4Runner 92 4Runner and the 2000 Tacoma

I am for the most able to use the old metal plate and screw locations
