Shift Lever Removal Question

I have a question for anyone out there that may have run into this before.

I was set up to remove my shift lever on my '90 V6 5-speed. got the transfer lever out, no problem, but I'm running into trouble on the shift lever. the collar doesn't seem to want to push down far enough to turn counter-clockwise to release it.

I tried moving the lever around a bit while I was also trying to press and turn the collar - no luck. I also lifted the lever to assure that it was centered in the collar. I had this lever out a number of years ago, and I just did the one on the Tacoma last week. Both times were easy, so I'm stumped as to why this time is causing me trouble.

Any thoughts as to what to do, or look for would be appreciated, since I wasn't finding anything through search.

I've found the best way to remove the collar is with two #2 flat screwdrivers, opposing the screwdrivers you can get enough force to push the collar down, as well as turn the collar... hope that helps.... don't know what else to tell you.....
