But, it's just silly to say that IFS is comparable to SA in any off road context beyond the high speed sand/desert stuff. IFS, as we know it, was designed to give a cushy ride so you won't spill your latte. The IFS on any stock truck was not designed with any sort of off road prowess as a goal. Sure, you can beef it up, but you can't teach a pig to sing. It's wastes your time and annoys the pig. The guys who keep the IFS for desert running put as much money and labor in as any Solid Axle Swap and they replace darn near as much.
Take any well engineered SAS, put it next to a well built IFS and the SAS will always go places the IFS cannot. The same cannot be said in reverse, unless you are talking about 80 mph down a desert wash.

But I still want my five minutes back.

Wheeling what I have!
I've been wheeling what I have for 20 years now. The old toy has always surprised the Ford/Jeep/GM/Dodge crowd with how well it gets places. Just got back from Moab: Flatiron Mesa, Hell's Revenge, Cliffhanger, Elephant Hill, Horse Canyon. We had 7 rigs on Flatiron, and I was the only IFS (the only toy for that matter). Everyone (including me) was impressed at how well it wheeled. The only place it stumbled at all was on Tipover Challenge: I have open rear diff and didn't get the best line up it. FWIW, I've been running with the swaybar disconnected for a couple of weeks now.

HELLO EVERYONE!!! im fairly new to this forum but as a cert. toyota tech for the past 13yrs. i would take my ifs as a daily driven wheeler any day of the week. you wouldnt believe how many probs. we see w/ the sas compaired to ifs. and the costs of repairs on a sas. is way more than ifs and more frequent.

) I had SFA on my previous truck (Daihatsu Rocky) and it gave me lots of problems, leaking oil , half a dozen of bearings that needed to be replaced...My 894runner has over 300000kms on it and ifs is still in its original shape-all I have to do is change lower balljoints. It rides smoothly on-road, and it takes me where I want to go off road
.PS. I would like to do the SAS
, when I get another DD

I'm not much of a crawler so IFS is nice if you do a lot of onroad, and if your offroad is mostly higher speed traildriving, like I do. But don't fool yourself, stock IFS sucks for extreme climbing.
If you are going to use your IFS for hardcore climbing, you are going to need to upgrade to something with more travel, and strength:

this thread IS hilarious!
anyways, IFS will go many many places. I agree that the only true need for SAS is in the rocks...
I'd build up an IFS over going to a SA... I don't mess with rocks, really.
and my IFS stock truck goes just as well as my buddies' jeeps with 31's and 3" lifts. and they are SFA...

i have a 4x4 too, and i offroad as well, but i agree with everyone here: dont come here startin sh()t and expect everyone to be nice to you. who CARES if you can outwheel someone or not? its all about havin fun. and if we were to 'compete', id probably win since i know how to offroad AND i know how my vehicle handles offroad. for the record: ive seen a ALMOST stock VW Bug
(60s) outperform a fully modded truck. its ALL about the driver. parts help, but its mostly the driver. not tryin to bash you man, but come on, dont come here and try to start an arguement, that aint cool
