Seating Options

Looking to Replace my seats in my 86 runner...
what model car or truck seats convert the best... I have a welder and all that good stuff so customizing is not a problem... was thinking of 3rd generation 4runner seating and converting so I have all matching stuff....has anyone had any luck with this??

3rd gen seats suck. So do 95+ taco seats.

Try newer corolla or scion seats.

I've got scion seats in my taco and love them. Check my build thread in my signature.

Put these in mine not a 4runner, but same concept, I think they look pretty factory...from a 93 mazda mx6...you can make any seat fit if you've got a welder and the ingenuity in the bottom picture you can see the mounts I had to make front and rear

I found a pair of bucket seats from a mid 80`s corolla and with a few mods mounted them to the stock sliders from my 86 4Runner and put them in. The stock seats were wasted when i got it, and these corolla seats are nice.

A 94 isn't a 3rd gen.
That's cool though.

I put seats out of a 95-?? Civic. They were gray to match my interior, perfect condition, and three out of the four bolt holes will match. Then just drill and bolt with washers the fourth. Much better than my 60/40, and easier to get to the back. Here they are:

The SR5 Seats in the 1st gen 4runners are better, not by much, but better than the ones in the 2nd gen 4runner seats. I have not spent much time in 3rd gen seats, but I have not heard good things about them. The tacoma seats in my 03 Tacoma sucked so I swapped in some heated leather seats from a Pontiac G6 and they rock.

For your 4runner, if you don't have SR5 seats from 84-89 up front now, I would find a pair and have them reupholstered. However if you find a 2nd gen with the adjustable seats, you can take the fronts and put them in and then swap the cushions from the 2nd gen onto your frames from your 1st gen for the back seats. You will have matching seats front and back and the you are only giving up about 15% comfort, in my opinion.

I have a write up on the back seat cushion swap on here somewhere.

I have a pair of SR5 seats from a 85 2WD pickup. They are tan in color. I also have the arm rest that will go in between them. They are posted on the Green Bay WI dudes name list under SR5 seats Make me an offer I will also ship if you pay the shipping

I think the best Toyota seats are from a 94 ish SR5 4runner. Very snug holding and bolt right in (or close to it).

I'm just gunna through this out there, technically a '94 IS a third gen if were referring to pickups. There may have been a misunderstanding.

I swapped in a set of 93 SR5 4runner seats into my 89 4runner. Perfect fit, just needed to drill one hole for the passenger seat mount (rear on the outside). I would recommend that if you do try to swap in a set from another 4runner then do yourself a favor and figure out how to keep the original passenger seat base. It makes it easier to get folks in and out of the back. I've got plans to go buy a junk seat out of a first gen and swap the base onto my new(er) seats.

The SR5 seats have several adjustments and are crazy comfortable.

Thanks for all the pics.

I'm a bit skeptical of really old seats. Lots of butt-miles in them already.

I guess it wouldn't take a lot to be better than that terrible bench. My back twinges at the thought of more than 1/2 an hour in it.

i know this is a old thread and it's been covered before. but the 86 trucks that come with 1pc bench seats have 4 mounting points. 2 / and 2 _ . anymore have pics or details showing how they mounted bucket seats from later runners/trucks to fit in the std cab? the back's seem easy to figure out but what about the slanted parts for the front ?

after all it is tuesday

i am assuming the 88 cab is the same. I installed two bucket seats after
I removed my stock bench. The threaded mount holes are there.

totally different. the outer fronts and rears are the same. when the wife gets home i'll take pics. there's only 4 holes for the bench seat nothing else. guess the designer never thought of bucket seats at the time. i'd rather be safe than sorry instead of the whole seat going with me into the wheel on impact.
