Seal in type windshield instead of glue in

Hey guys. I am currently in the middle of replacing my windshield and decided to ditch the chrome trim and go with the seal on my 1987 4runner. My glass guy is saying I need to get the defroster plate off, and am wanting to get some pointers on someone who has done this conversion before. I have no problem taking the dash apart to get that plate off, but is it 100% necessary or is there an easier way?

Good morning,

Here’s a thread to comb over, it’s pretty long and may contain some info for you.

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-maker-107858/

There are a few more threads that are on this topic but this is the biggest one.

Not sure on the plate or if that is in the thread but I have a 91 so I’m not sure….someone else may chime in with some direction

Please post up how it goes for you. Like if you had to sand the glass to fit. Or if not, where did you get the right sized glass.

I'm thinking about trying this on my 86 Xtra Cab but I'm not there yet. As far as removing the defroster plate, I'd think it would be easier to install the gasket if the lip was trimmed off. And then leave the plate installed so it's not such a bitch to get to the mounting bolts once the glass is in. If I do this I will be sure to post up.
