Running VERY rich after an engine swap...? Any idea's?

Hello all,

Just did a 22re to 22re engine swap in my 88 4runner.

- I have a 4 month old O2 sensor and worked great with the previous 22re. (check engine light has not come on so I only assume its working correctly)

- Cat convertor has been taken out

Any other info needed? Just ask.

Just a couple idea's of where I should start troubleshooting would be great!

I am getting approx. 180 KM / Tank of gas...Around 40L

Thanks!!!

How do you know its running rich? By smelling the exhaust? What mileage did you get before the swap and before taking out the cat?

Ya, the smell of the exhaust, which has been confirmed by three other motor head buddies i have.....who only know VW's

The gas milage B4 the engine swap - 280km/tank (without cat and new O2 sensor)
B4 taking out the cat and getting a new O2 sensor less than 200km/tank

After the engine swap 180km/tank

@ approx. 40L per tank

Well simply smelling it isn't a 100%, especially after removing the cat! but since you seem to have lost a lot of mileage, something must be amiss. Has your driving style changed? What all did you swap over to the new engine, if anything at all? was it rebuilt or a junkyard special?

My driving style has changed a bit, but for only the better, it's my first engine swap and I would hate to be hard on it when its in the process of getting comfy.

The engine was bought off a 16 year old who took great care of his truck and only has approx. 260*** KM's. Compression test was 180 across the board.

The only thing swaped over other than the engine it self was the distrubiture cap, OEM - new.

First thing I'd check is for air in the cooling system or low coolant, if the ECU sensor for coolant temp doesn't get enough hot coolant on it, the ECU thinks the engine is always cold and turns the "choke" on all the time, ie runs rich. I just had the same problem, not on a Toy but same problem...

Good call,

I will check into that, the only thing that pops in my head it my gauge, it doesent read cold, so if the scenario was happening it should, no? Anyhow, will get on your idea and let you know.

Cheers!

Well, I don't know the 22re, but on the 3.0 there are two temp sensors, one for the gauge and one for the ECU. Fairly common actually to have 2 seperate units, I know my geo has two different units too.
