i just don't use the a/c, don't need it, i drive will the shell off all summer ... the reason i bought a 1st gen anyway

so, if i remove the a/c compressor to gain a bit more horsepower, is there anything i should be aware of/concerned with? should i just remove any hoses and tape over any holes?

No, if you're never going to use it again, no problem.
You won't really gain anything by removing the compressor as it is not engaged (turning) when it's not turned on anyway. The A/C clutch is just free spinning.

I think that I would just cut the belt and leave everything in tact. Resale, changing your mind, etc. would be much easier to just put on a new belt and be back to good.

 

that's a good point, but i will probably never sell, would keep it in the fam

just noticed that the tubes from the compressor lead to a radiator type cooling unit that sits in front of the radiator ... i can remove that too, right?

Have you considered converting it into an on-board-air system for airing up tires and such? You won't really gain much in the way of extra horses by not running it but the added benefit of having OBA would add at least 10 points of "cool" to the rig.

 

If you have never used the ac, if you do use it later on, the clutch might be stuck so the first time you use it, the belt might squeak like crazy.

You won't gain ANYTHING by removing it. If you do experience any "gain" it will be all in your head. Removing the condensor from in front of the radiator *might* gain better airflow to the radiator, but from the sounds of it you don't live in an area that gets hot so better cooling really won't matter. If you're tha worried about the .000000000000989 hp it might be robbing you, just remove the belt.

 

whoa ... i didn't know i could do that ... that's major cool points and utilitarian points ... i will do some websearch and see how it's done and post what i find here later

it is out now though and i'm noticing how much easier it is to get to components under the air intake ... but having OBA would be almost priceless ... thanks for the awesome suggestion

Definitely keep the a/c intact. You will be kicking yourself if you decide you want it later on and have to reinstall everything.

and from reading all the debates about using the A/C compressor versus installing an electric one ... my final answer is ... if you don't use/need your A/C then it's a good idea because it works well and is fairly inexpensive
