Rough Running and Rough Idle

well this is a very long story but im gonna make it short and sweet....i picked up this 95 runner (automatic) and it has the 3vze motor....this is the 5th runner i own....so i know them very well....anyway....i picked it up from a guy that couldnt get it running.....(had no spark)

brought it home and started back probing wires....vehicle had new distrib, new coil, new ignitor, new ecu.....still nothin....found that the harness had some melting....due to the egr valve hose broke and whom ever owned the truck drove it until it got so hot it burned valves and started melting the harness....so i had some wires melted together.....

so.....fixed the harness

got 2 other heads with good valves and put it all back together

compression check every cyl is at or above 180 psi

timing with cam gears and crank is perfect

the motor when starting sounds good until it catches....

then it runs like ˟˟˟˟˟....

new headgaskets
new water pump
new thermo
new timing belt
new idle pulley
new ecm
new distrib
new coil
new igni
new fuel filter
new fuel regulator
new plugs
new cap
new rotor
new wires
new gaskets on entire upper end

motor throws no codes at all

any help would be appreciated....but im sorta stumped....when i try and check timing the ecu is tryin to comprensate and make it run better so my timing gun light dances all around the mark.....

when it does start if i throttle up i get a decent amount of black smoke comin out the exhaust....

im runnin out of ideas in a hurry....

i believe the heads came off of an earlier 3vze motor...like 90....but engine codes are the same.....so im assumin nothing has changed....cept some sensors added and what not....cause of the change from obd0 and obd1

if i unplug tps or its plugged in i get no change

egr checked out ok....so i know thats not stuck open....

as i think of more stuff ill add it...

and i have no vacuum leaks (dumped carb cleaner all over and never picked up in rpms)

cmon guys....i need the help....i cant have 4 out of 5 runnin....need them all runnin =[

any help would be awesome.....

What's in there for gas? If it has been sitting for a while it might have moisture in there.

OK, I see you have melted wires in the wiring harness; could be a hornet's nest of electrical problems in there causing it to run like cr@p.

only thing i can think of at the moment is i have an o scope comin home tomorrow....and im gonna check some signals to see if the distrib is sendin the signal correct and by the time it gets to the ecu if that signal matches..

besides that....im completely stumped...

I had the same problem. Just wouldn't run smooth. I had new plugs in it, but they ended up not burning hot enough and had a sporadic miss. I put some cheap NGK V-powers in it and it smoothed it right out. I also tore the top end apart and took my fuel injectors out and cleaned them out the best I could w/o sending them off to witchhunter.com . A 9v battery seemed to work good to open them up for cleaning and I haven't had any problems.

A couple other things I might recommed is taking the EGR off and dumping some carb cleaner through it incase you might have a little blockage.

I had a friend who had a 22RE and he had a miss on a cylinder and couldn't figure it out, turned out it was a bad valve seat, so you might check to make sure your valves are opening and closing correctly.

And last, I'd put some seafoam in it.

Hope it works out for you.

I was really skeptical about replacing my plugs being new and all, but thats what ended up being the major problem.

Just for grins, check your engine coolant sensor.

When I had problems with my 3.0 it wasn't throwing a code and had similar symptoms. Regardless, I think this one little sensor is often overlooked from the myriad of threads I've read over the time I've been here on the board. If it checks good for you then move on, of course. But, atleast you'll know.

ill check it out....but i dont think a coolant sensor is going to create the kinda rough running i have.....i dont think i explained the problem enough....its not like i have a rough idle....this is such a rough runnin condition if i slam the butterfly open the motor dies....i have a HORRIBLE misfire....if i gently raise the throttle the idle goes up but starts puffin black smoke hardcore and starts pingin so bad......

Keep me updated, this is boggling my mind as well.

I thought maybe you might have a clog somewhere in your fuel system, try some BG44K, that stuff will clean anything out.

You mentioned earlier, that when you checked the timing, the mark was dancing around, you should have jumped the terminals on the diagnostic port so you can set your base timing 10BTC without the ecm compensation.
