Well just finished putting on all new ball joints, shocks, and lca bushings. Decided to turn around quick on a wide open flat dirt area...wheel grabbed a small divit, crappy tire fell off its bead....and I set her up on its roof.

Luckily the girlfriend and me were fine. minor cuts and scrapes. The 4r didn't fair quite as well.









What do i do now? Couldn't get the engine to turn over, but it sat upside down for about an hour before I could get enough guys out there to flip it back over. I think the cylinder's may just be full of oil...(will try to crack..but only gets about 1/4 turn before getting hung up.

I found a local (2 hrs away) guy, parting out an 89 v6 at (mines an 87 22re mt) who is letting go of the body, doors, and fenders for $500. I just wasn't sure what the big differences would be between the years, and being a v6 vs 22re, and at vs mt (besides the wiring/computer.)

 

Bodes are the same, should be a direct swap.

Being that the truck was upside down for an hour, its definitely flooded with oil. I know the first reaction to flipping it back over is to see if it starts, but its definitely the worst idea. The best thing you can do is let it sit for a few hours, then try and start it.

Also, How fast were you going when doing a "quick turn around"? probably going a little to fast, especially since a tire fell off the bead.

 

Well yes. Probably going a bit too fast. Didn't seem to worry about it being a wide open flat dirt field. Was cruising probably around 15-20mph. No doubt my fault, and well i guess im learning my lesson :/.

First time I had ever rolled a car, it ran for a few minutes after even upside down (key fell out of ignition...and couldn't find it). Seemed like it sputtered out of gas, and didn't seize or anything. So im happy for that. Hopefully I didn't ruin anything by trying to start her up. Luckily I ignored my friend who wanted to bump start it.

Thanks for the info about the bodies being a direct swap. I think this is the route Ill go, though i hear its a big PITA. Just would hate to part her up.

 

well get a bfh, a comealong maybe a forlift with some chains. knock out the winsheid and bend her back. isnt gonna be perfect for a dd anymore but u gotta good start on a trail rig. i got a 92 runner trail rig that used to be the dd untill the gymnastic routine down the trail and a 94 street queen, i use the 92 to guinne pig all my mods. if i like the outcome i duplicate the mod on the 94

 

Oh man, it ran upside down for 20 minutes, and now wont start? The motors probably toast, it had zero oil pressure for 20 min, then you tried cranking it when the oil was in the cylinders....... good luck with that....

Damm shame on such a clean 4runner.

Drain the oil, change spark plugs and hope for the best.

So good news...finally

She does run, actually seems to run as good as she did before. Can't hear any wierd knocks or grinds, except for the power steering, which was just low on fluid.

Probably had a half a quart to a quart of oil in the cylinders, too bad i didn't realize that it was going to shoot out like a freaking fountain the first time i turned it over .

So now i think I have decided that I would like to fix it, and just swap a a new cab onto her, I know its alot of work. But i actually enjoy seeing how everything goes together, plus it gives me the change to undercoat and paint the things that i wanted to do before.

I found a seller that wants $500 for a cab w/ sunroof, but without doors, tailgate or fenders. Does this seem like a decent deal? It looks clean, and little to no rust (thank you california) I don't have a huge budget to get this thing going again, but I did like having it as a weekday driver, to keep the miles off my 06 (which has 112,000) already.

 

wont hurt anything to try talking the guy down a little since u are going to have to find a good set of doors... and glass.

 

I have swapped frames on a pick up so from the cab forward it is actually easier than you might think. I am sure from the cab back there are just a few more bolts, but the body will come off in on piece.

As long as you got the ability to lift the body off, which you can use big bumper jacks and some creativity it can be done. The bodies are the same. I havent changed wiring so I dont know for sure on that. I would be tempted to find one with a 22re wiring.

If you decided to do a body swap, PM me and I can send you the steps I used do mine. I also sent to another YTer so I will have to dig thru my old emails so it might take a bit. Once I had the engine and tranny out it took 12 hours on Saturday and around 12 on Sunday, using basic tools. If you have pneumatic tools and some help it would go alot faster.

 

I figure as long as I make everything as light as possible, and pinpoint all the wires and lines actually hooked up to the body, It shouldn't be too bad. Lifting may be a headache, Didn't realize how heavy these things were until we had to push her back up on her feet.

The parts cab comes with a windshield, and im going to try to get the matching doors so i know everything will fit.

I noticed that my 87 doors have the wing windows, and the later 89's do not. Are they swapable? (can i add the wing windows/glass from my old doors? since they didn't break) I kind of like the wing windows...but then again...don't care for the side mirror placement.

 

*laugh* Yeah that's a bit of weight to roll back up on the tires.

The doors should swap as long as you're going from one 1st gen to another. My 89 has the wing windows and I agree that they are nice and I think yours will swap into the newer doors. Might want to look that up just to be sure though.

 

Looks like Im going to go pick up the Cab on Friday. Agreed on the entire cab w/sunroof & windshield, and doors w/o panels for $550. Not bad. A local supplier quoted me $250 per door alone..but they are always extremely expensive.

Anybody know what i can do with the old body? would ecology or a scrap yard take it? Its got to be worth something in metal alone.

u will have to cut up the body and take it to a metal yard and get some money for it, but since they have vin # on the body u might want to check with cali dmv to see what they are going to make u go threw to do the swap. paperwork wise. they will want something knowing them... unless u are able to get the vin plates off and switch them over...

just cut it up in a few smaller pieces and the recycler will take it with no hassle .. someone like sims metal. about $80-$100
