Ive got some jibber jabber on my diff housing, ive got nothing on the axle, and all my bearings got numbers on them, but no shop has been able to tell me what "ring gear" size i have. ANd without that, looks like i can't begin to get my only ride back out on the road, let alone ORDER the stinking things. Help me out guys!

Front or rear? What year truck? What engine?

 

8" = 4wd fr/rr
7.5" = 2wd or IFS front

Look on your drivers side door sill, there should be a sticker on there with info, there will be a gear code on it.

Going with stock tire size.

5sp 28" tires = 4.10 gears
5sp 31" tires = 4.56 gears

auto 28" tires = 4.56 gears (pretty sure on that one)
auto 31" tires = 4.88 gears

 

Let me explain the situation. I have had pac man chasing me around where ever ive driven for the past month. I've replaced u Joints, the wheel bearing that is pressed on the axle shaft, and now i have my 3rd member pulled out to replace what i have heard called the "carrier" bearing. All the bearings in the Diff seem to have excessive play and whirr when spun. That said, i can't find bearings through anyone for the carriers. They are telling me taht they are dealer only, special order, or 3 days away. So ...
maybe i got the nomenclature wrong. I jumped onto a few online stores and saw what looked like my carrier bearing listed as a INNER WHEEL BEARING. IS this what i should be referring to them as?
And, The options given to me for ring gear size are 7.5 or 7.8 and i believe since i have IFS and a solid rear axle they are supposed to be 8 inch. Maybe 7.8 rounds up?

Correct, 7.8 = 8. 7.5" in the front axle for IFS, 7.8"(8") for the rear. Not sure on the bearing, other than someone has them, surely.

If it's an automatic it could have 4.30.

 

no its a manual tranny. And I am just dumbfounded at the price of these bearings. If cross matched, and bought from BCA or Motor City they are gonna run 100 for 2 carriers, and 60-80 for the yoke bearings.
Isn't there a set i can buy that'll package em all up in one, and for 1 nice price? Anyone with any hints?

 

Thank you mudhippy! So i have 8.0" ring gear, 4.1 gear ratio w/stock tires (not on) and 2 pinions. Glad that's set in stone, the site you referred me to had everything going by the VIN no guess work.

I've used all timkin bearings on both of my diffs when i rebuilt them. Top notch equipment. For carrier bearings, they run about 30 bucks a pop.

Call them up, tell them what you need, it gets shipped to you.

If you need it in a hurry, they should be able to supply you with a local timkin dealer, and you can get someone to take you over there, if they have them in stock. Only problem with that is there might not be a dealer, or they may not have them in stock.

Okay, and before i go delving into this dumping $$ in to my diff. Do either of you, especially axle ike, had any of the symptoms my truck had? Wheel wobble when on jackstands. And if so, what exactly needs to be replaced. Just the bearings, the entire diff gutted and replaced? Some 1 told me that i should be checking the spider gears for play. And mine has play without a doubt, but isn't there a certain tolerable amount?

 

Not sure what you mean by "wheel wobble", however have you checked and made sure that you don't have a bent wheel (rim) ...

yes. This is a list of things i know for sure it isn't due to replacement.
Wheel bearing, Rim, Backing plate, Axle Shaft, and U Joint. Nevertheless, the symptom persists. When the truck is put on jackstands and the wheel attached. One could grab the top and bottom of the tire, rock it perpendicular to normal direction of travel and hear a tick tick tick. Ehcih amplifies into waka waka waka while driving.

 

You'd have to remove the diff to check the side gear (spider gear) backlash (rotational play).

Someone enlighten me on why they refer to the 8" toyota rear dif as "2-pinion" ?

Last time I checked ya gots a pinion and a ring gear ... um, what part is referred to as a second pinion? That one thats invisible?

I couldnt get the pin out to get the side gears out to check the thrust washers and didnt care much as i already knew my dif was shot. However I would imagine the thrust washers wear then the case wears.

anyone back that up?

Regardless something wears in the differential. I was told by a mechanic it's the case that wears out on the side gears.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I'll be calling my driveline specialists here and letting em' know my problem specifically and what i want them to do. Thanks again. I just hope this solves my problem, i never really liked pac man.

 

To bring this to attention for all who might care. The mechanics i took the diff to are specialists. They do driveline stuff only, and when talking to them and describing my problem, they told me (without looking at the 3rd member) that it sounds like a wheel bearing or bent axle shaft. I donno, that kinda scares me.
