Retrofitting a OEM roof rack?

I don't have room for a trailer at home, but I've figured out a solution.
I wrapped some carpet around the front bar on the boat. I can now slide the boat down the roof without a roof rack. I think its probably easiest to leave the system alone- if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
