HOw tough is it to remove the headliner?

Got a boat, need a roof rack now. Hope to buy/install the rack this weekend. Its just too heavy to carefully place the boat on the roof without scratching it without a rack.

Mmm...I think it would be quite a chore...I'm not sure how exactly it's attached, but I'd bet it's those stupid plastic thingies that break a lot.

It might mostly be supported by trim...

I used a freaking cut off wheel to cut mine when I did the chop, and it doesn't sag at all. Those things are really up there.

I think the boat is too wide for the OEM rack. Gonna have to think of something else I think. Bugger.

put the stock rails on and just get the yakima or Thule towers and crossbars...
IIRC, the crossbars span ALMOST the full width of the cab...

Yeah, maybe two inches from the edge of the door.

So its time for me to do this. Need a rack on the 4runner for a trip in early july.

Im picking up a factory rack for $50, went by princess auto and bought their threaded insert instalation kit. It has 4 different sized thread inserts. Not bad for $35

Gonna put the rack in next week...

Matt do you ever wash that thing or just keep fishing out of it and hope it rains?

I took a look at a roof rack for mine (1st gen) so I could haul a boat but am unsure if the Thule's will take the weight of a boat with it being attached to the drip rails on the fiberglass hardtop.

Two things
1. you don't need to pull the headliner all the way down just one side and only enought to see the cross members in the roof then you mark them on the outside and replace the headliner. I just used a small piece of wood to hold the side of the headliner down long enough to mark the cross members then reinstalled it.

2. After the rack is in place you can just get a couple 2 x 4 's and strap them to the rails with bungie cords so that you have the extra room for the sides of the boat , then strap the boat down as normal to the rails you may end up going under the boat but it will work I have done similar type tie downs and run the freeway at speed with no issues just while you are driving if you stop check the boat to rail straps to make sure they have not loosened up on you and re- tighten them if so.

Where exactly are the crossmembers? Shouldnt you just have to center the rack and it should all line up??

That would be nice but sorry to say there are cross members that run through the roof front to back and the issue is that if you don't mark them you may hit the side of the rails or the middle of one or two of them and not be able to set the rivset's in place there so you may miss an anchor point or two and you want/need at many points to anchor the rack as possible for strength.
