My 92' 4runner developed a leak in the passenger side valve cover, the gasket has obviously failed at the corner and I am going to be replacing both gaskets with the camshaft plugs. Besides the Valve cover gaskets and camshaft plugs, I assume I would need to replace the upper intake gasket as well since it needs to be removed before getting the covers off the heads. Gasket will be Toyota OEM brand.

For those of you who have replaced these before, do you have any knowledge or recommendations which would help would get the job done more efficiently ?

its really easy, just a 12mm and your set! haha just take your time when you unplug all the tubes so you know where they go once you put everything back together. also make sure use some rvt on the half moons and dont over tighten the valve cover bolts.

 

bobby...it's a 3vze....no half-moons.

there are some good write-ups about the procedure......I may or my not have them marked in my son's thread (in my sig) as we are rebuilding his motor.

otherwise , sounds like you have the list right.....we have yet to do his valve covers , but once you have the plenum off, yo may find yourself in a more "ambitious" mood in that now you can access alot more stuff......that's kinda how we started.

 

well....you remove the upper intake plenum...remove the valve covers...take out old gaskets...clean everything up REAL GOOD, put FIPG at the 4 corners of the valve cover (make sure it's resistant to oil, as not all of it is.) slap on new gaskets....put valve covers back on torque to spec and throw the plenum back on and torque to spec.

pretty simple lol


might look at replacing the PCV valve.


and it's a BEAST to get out if it's rock hard like mine was.......

If you are removing all the vac lines on the passenger side of the plenum, use some tape and label each one to make sure they go back to the right place.

Or,

Leave all the vac lines attached and once the plenum unbolted, just flip it over onto the passenger side fender to get it out of your way.
