Replacing Engine Mounts on 1990 V6 4Runner
Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but can I replace the engine mounts without removing (lifting) the engine?
My fan shroud was broken and my dad (who is a mech) suggested that one of my mounts might be broken. I believe the driver side is the one that's broken so I want to replace it.
Is this possible without removing or lifting the beast out of there? If so, on a scale of 1-10, how difficult is it?
I have a 1990 4Runner V6 3.0L 4WD. If anyone knows the part number for these, I'd be extra happy. I found a pair on eBay 12301-35141, listed as the right year/engine, just wanted to double check.
Thanks & Merry Christmas
Mike

I think you will need to at least lift the engine enough to support it, but I've never replaced one with the engine in. Maybe??? you could support the engine from below with a jack but an engine host would be much better (I'm always worried about denting the oil pan or something). You'll need to remove the bracket that holds the rubber mount to the block (3 bolts on one side or 4 bolts on the other) to get to the main bolt that goes through the rubber mount backing plate.
??? I really don't know for sure

Figured as much, I can rent a hoist here in town, not sure how much.
Any idea on the part or where I can get one? The Yota shop here in town is ridiculously expensive.

I used OEM for my replacements. Try the online dealers they are much more reasonable, like this one:

Are you running dual cases?

Of course the Camry is a front wheel drive (trans axle) and would be different. At the very least he'll need to take the weight off that motor mount some how and its probably about 600 lbs of motor and tranny balanced over 2 front mounts and one rear mount (tranny crossmember) Maybe??? he could wedge a 2x4 between the block or head and the inner fender or something like that.
??? I really am guessing here.

I just got done with a 3.4 swap, but previously the motor was a 3.0 from a '90 4Runner. And since you reuse the mounts, I had just ordered a pair from 1st Toyota Parts myself.
Here is what's on my receipt:
Item Number: 12361-65010
MSRP: $59.53
Price: $42.86
Engine - Mounts
Front mount, 4Runner, 4wd
3.0l, 1991 - 1994
You can look up the part number at 1st Toyota or possibly do more research online for price shopping.
I agree with Mt_Goat... I think you'll need to support the motor in some way to relieve tension on the mounts and remove the brackets. Probably only have to raise it 1 to 2 inches max. "Only" is a relative term. You might find you run out of space with radiator hoses, general wiring and vacuum lines.
I also heard that places like NAPA do occasionally carry such parts, and could be cheaper... but quality may suffer.

That part # is listed as being for the 4 cyl engine NOT the V6, and yes, they are different.
