I need to change the power steering pump on my 1993 4Runner, but my Chilton says that because I have rear anti-lock brakes only a dealership can do this job. (Rear wheel ABS, non-integral) Is that true, or is there a way around this? I have had the Chilton make this claim on other projects that I had no problem accomplishing. Any information would be awesome!

 

I think Chiltons proof readers were slacking or went to the potty when that chapter came up.

It makes no sense what so ever that the brakes are connected to the power steering fluid. Are we putting brake fluid in the Power steering pump.

Are there any brake lines that need to be disconnected to get the pump off that could only be the reason but they fail to mention that!!!!

 

Thank you for that comment wyoming9! That is exactly what I was thinking when I read the manual, but since I am pretty new to the Yota, I figured I better make certain. Didn't wanna find out about any strange adaptations the hard way!

 

forget that, I have rear antilocks and I changed the whole engine, no worries.

 

The power steering does have something to do with the ABS actuator on Rear ABS systems:

I can not explain it, as I am looking into my system as well, but there are break lines going into this actuator that also has power steering pressure lines to it.

 

Thank you for all the information guys. Based on the combination of comments, I am guessing that I can do the job, but probably need to include bleeding the lines as part of the project, just to be safe! Thank you for including the link to manuals as well, that should help me with study preparation. I know Chiltons are not always the best manuals to go with, they just tend to be the most accessible.

 

Or maybe even just clamp the line to the actuator before removing the hose... This probably makes most sense. I am totally open to further comments on the subject, otherwise, I will let you all know how it goes!
