replacement fuel tank 2nd gen
Hi All.
95 4runner. Completely roached fuel tank. (Even the pickup tube is clogged LOL)
Only one shop in N CO used to clean them out, but guess they've closed. A shop in FC said that shop closed 4 yrs ago.
Consensus says that I'd probably be better off just buying a replacement.
Only threads (on any forum) that I can find are few years old, when I guess Dorman and Spectre or such had quite a few fails it would seem.
Any one want to offer witty insight or formulated opinions? Will likely purchase pump/strainer/bracket from OEM. Toyota Tank seems pretty spendy.
Snide remarks also accepted.
I have a 91 4x4 4runner donor. Not sure about the condition of the gas tank but it's probably fine. If you're interested pm me. I'm in CA tho so shipping might be a deterrent

fuel tank cleaning
Some updates with lessons learned. And the expected question.
I ended up ordering a tank (from amazon - yes, I know - but it was $50 cheaper than next alternative). I had tried acid, etc. Gravel, screws, whatever for abrasive. did not do well.
Pic before attached.
Few days later it occurred to me to try Muriatic acid (HCL). It was 33%. It works great on rust. Did not do so well on the tar like substance on bottom. That and the top of the tank, I just decided to go with new. I did manage to clean the pump bracket, the fuel return tube was completely plugged off.
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. I had a full face respirator (guys on the crew would use this type mask to stick their head into the acid transport and check level). And I had training on proper use.
These fumes are toxic. DO NOT BREATHE THEM. It'll dang sure kill 'rona virus and everything else in your lungs LOL.
Used a rivet to reattach the lead and ground wire for the fuel pump.

Now the Q; Have a tank from a 99. turns out its like 1/2 full. So this pm I was going to test its' fuel pump, and empty the tank as much as possible.
Jumped +B and grnd to pins 4,5. Can hear the pump going, but I'm not getting anything out of fuel supply tube. The 99 did run (albeit horribly) last year when I started this adventure.

Thought I'd post an update.
Got the new tank, pretty much identawackle save for lack of an internal baffle. Made in CA, eh.
Did get it primed and painted outside.
Got the pump off the 99 working. I guess last week I must've just gone Shrimpin with Forrest down in Greenbo AL, if you know what I mean.
Think its going to be fine; PUmped probably 10 gal of gas out of that tank. Think every time it bobbled was human error. Mostly about 1 gal in 90 seconds. Probably should have measured pressure. Headed off to daughters wedding, so will worry about fuel sending unit (95) later. Its pretty rusty as well.
Forgot to post I got replacment from Amazon. I know, but it was 50 bux less and free shipping.

Reason: add tank vendor info
Thanks, a timely posting as I figure out what to do with mine. Rad shops here will de-rust, clean, and seal, but the first quote I got was
will try one more, then go from there. Likely no big deal, but I wonder how the lack of internal baffle will affect things for you?

Well, I'll just keep it topped off at full so there's no sloshin' around!! Yeah, probably a fail. Not sure on that to be honest.
I had leads on getting original cleaned after the acid failed. And one thing I didn't note in posts (somewhere), aside from the safety! safety! safety! is after you're done, you MUST neutralize and dispose of the neutral properly. That takes effort (pH strips, etc). And one can't just dump it down the sink, even if neutalized. (Well, maybe in W Tx lol.) But the one shop in FC that used to do baths closed, and some folks around there said the last few times they'd looked into it, it was not worth cost even if someplace was near by.
The tank from that 99 was amazingly clean too. I know it was wrecked in early 2017. And was maybe 1/2 full? Which makes me wonder if something else wasn't going on with the 95 (other than it sat for nigh on 10 years?)
Was going to post pics for compare, but will do so maybe next week.
