Replace or rebuild leaking steering box?

The steering box on my 88 pickup is leaking. I can get a seal kit for about $120.00.

After looking at the FSM and seeing all of the Special service tools needed to do the job it looks like a pain.

A rebuilt steering box would cost about 3x as much but seems alot quicker and easier.

Anyone rebuilt thier own steering box? Do I really need all of the SST's?

Thanks in advance.

It would be a learning experience thats is for sure Have you rebuilt a manual trans?? Would you try that your self?? If you had a spare one so you could work at it with no pressure.

Only you can make that call !!

I would if the budget allows go for the rebuilt one I myself never seem to have good luck with yard parts. At least in this neck of the woods.

Anyone parting out a truck close to you with a known good one.

Lots of info on this on Pirate. It's not that hard to rebuild, just don't lose the little balls
