I recently had some random dude punch in my rear window (I get the consolation of him having a huge gash, though.)

I don't have comprehensive coverage on my insurance so I was hoping to just replace it myself to avoid incurring repair costs.

I found several good choices from the Pick n Pull in town. I was wondering a couple things:

1) Is it possible to remove the glass from a rolled up and closed tailgate that has no battery to it?
2) Is it possible to remove the tailgate with the window rolled up?
3) I've looked but had a hard time finding a good walkthrough. Anybody know what direction to point me?

Here are the situations of the options from Pick n Pull:

- A couple with fully intact tailgates inside and out with rolled up windows
- One with the window down slightly (about an inch or two)
- One with the inside panels removed

I don`t think you can because you won`t have enough room to move things around and get it down.

It can be a pain when you can open the hatch.

Can you take a jumper battery in and jumper the window motor to get the window down??

How much for the whole rear hatch and have them remove it?/

 

I don't think Pick n Pull will remove stuff for you. It's all DIY.

How would I go about jumping the motor? Sorry, repairing my runner has basically been a learn-as-I-go process. I've learned a lot of stuff from books, yotatech, and just doing it, but this is a new one for me.

 

Take a jump box or a battery...some wire with alligator clips on the ends. You can take the inner panel off...unplug the motor and hot wire it down...reverse wires if it try to go up.

That will get you tailgate open. Take the whole tailgate if you can. Hard to come by. Then you can swap at home on your own time.

the plug you need to jump 2 will require 2 small wires....cables to big.

Make up some leads with alligator clips at both ends. bout 6 ft long. One red one black. Something everyone should have in thier toolbox. Autzone . 10 bucks. Electrical testing win forever.

 

If you climb inside the rear area (trunk for lack of a better term) you can get the window down without a battery. a battery is fine if the motor isn't burnt up but what if it is? just dig into the tailgate from inside the truck until you can get the motor out (3 fasteners) then hand-force the window down. works better with someone else outside pushing too. bring wd-40 or some other solvent in case its rusted up tight. once you get inside the tailgate you can disengage the lever that forces the tailgate to stay locked until the window is down. then, once you've gotten the window down a few inches (once its clear of the channels in the topper) you can open the tailgate and have easier access to get the whole thing apart.

So he punched your window in? Why arent you filing a police report and threatening a lawsuit to make him pay for someone to do this?

A police report has been filed. When the cop showed up he found a ton of blood in the area, checked the hospital, found the suspect and he confessed.

This was in a tiny Podunk town, and a random dude who is known to cause trouble apparently was pissed off and my runner was parked in the wrong place at the wrong time. I've called some glass shops and it's only going to be between $180 and $250 for a shop to repair it. That's hardly something I'd file a lawsuit for. I will send the receipts for all repair costs (regardless of whether I fix it or take it in) to the judge in Elko County and they will attempt to get the dude to pay up outside of court. No lawsuit needs to happen since he already confessed.

Lucky that guy didnt do something like that to my truck. Lets just say if he had a car he wouldnt be driving it anywhere anytime soon if I had my way.

 

If you pop the panel apart you can remove the window motor and lower the window by hand
Make sure to have a friend their to help.

Best advice tho is to grab the entire tail gate and resale whatever you don't use.

Picknpull up here in Washington quotes me 80 bucks for a complete tail gate with glass and motor. . But could not find one with in 200 miles of my location. . Ended up spending 300 for a decent tail gate with all the parts in it.
My tail gate was beat up pretty good and was missing all the regulator parts with broken glass..
