Hello,
I'm looking at getting a whole new exhaust, header back, installed on my 22re.
I've read a lot of back and forth on the subject of removing the catalytic converter.
In Alberta, it's not required to have a catalytic converter.
Can anyone elaborate on their experience with a 22re with no cat?
Fuel economy, power, sound, smell, please do tell.

Side note: It's a 93 so only one pre-cat O2 sensor.

 

ive got the 3.0 in my 88 4runner and i took it off and im not sure about how much more power, but it sounds good with my cheap glass pack but the one thing i have an issue with is the smell...it stinks, it comes right in my rear window and just sits in the truck. Im about to put my cat back on but its partially cored so we'll see then.

 

Tried my 3.0 a bunch if different ways. Runs better with the cat. Actually has a power band. Without the cat it didnt have enough exhaust velocity. Tried narrowing a length of pipe to give me some velocity but didnt run as good as with the cat. Have it back on now. And previous i was the guy that was hell bent on taking it off. I did and i learned.

 

yea thats how i feel, hopefully with the partially cored cat and a flowmaster 40 itll be a good setup, kinda tired of redoing it thats why i just threw what i have now on.

 

I went with a header, highflow cat, and just a glass pack on my old 22re and all i can say i 'NO MORE TORQUE' plus after the glasspack was a year old it went from low and tone'd to riceee . If your going to open up youe exhaust do a cam too. My buddies truck fulk exhaust like i just mentioned with a high torque cam freaking flys and has more low end torque than my 3vze :O

my striaght piped 22re is run to a stack right behind the driver seat in the bed, and it sounds amazing, the only thing is i had an o2 delete and my check engine light comes on occasinally scanning for the 02, from a ways away it would sound like an old 12v cummins, at low rpms anyways

 

I straight piped the 22re with just a small flow master muffler on it. before the cat was gone she sounded awesome. Now it sounds to ricee and blapps alot

 

when i put my downey header and 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with open muffler on my
22re before my 3.4 swap, i got more power everywhere, low mid and high rpm, plus it made way more power longer on top, probably 10 to 15 easy, now my v6 breathes real good too with the same system.
i did not run the high flow cat. still have it brand new in the box if i ever need it.

 

When I bought my 94 last year, it had the stock muffler and tailpipe. The cat converter was gone with a half blast straight pipe that leaked in its place. Now I have a Thrush welded muffler that I bought at Advance. I found out after I bought it that it is essentially a Flow Master as I heard that they lost the patent for a few years (?) and Thrush helped themselves to the design. I ordered a Tailpipe from Summit specifically for the 4Runners that is 2 1/4 inch. They fixed the straight pipe and she barks pretty good. Sounds good at idle, barks on acceleration but sounds a little different in different gears at certain RPM's. But I have a baby on the way and it's too loud. A drone sound develops at 60 to 70 mph in OD. I'm too old to be dealing with this all the time...20 years younger and no kids, no problem.

I think I'm going to go with a Thrush turbo which I had before on my 88. The turbo sounded good but not too loud under acceleration but was quiet when cruising. I'm sure the Thrush baffled muffler barks a little louder because of the cat not being there. And yeah, it does have a stronger smell outside the truck. I found that the lower part of the rubber seal on the tailgate was not sealing up the gap between it and the body so it was pulling fumes into the truck when I had the windows open. I cleaned the body there real good and added some window seal with a sticky back. It stopped the problem.

I go up the hill a little faster in 3rd than I did before but maybe that's because there's no exhaust leak at that straight pipe. My 88 went up pretty well also and I had a cat on that gutted itself. So I don't if not having a cat is really an issue for me , at least....

 

That's because you need to install a proper resonator, especially if you remove the cat.

 

Nah...don't want to spend that much time, thought or bucks into it. The 88 sounded reasonable with the Thrush turbo, gutted cat and no reasonator. It's a little deeper sounding than the fast/furious crowd but there isn't a v8 under that hood. It sounds too ricee and too loud...good for the younger crowd. I was just looking for a more free flowing exhaust. But thanks though.

I got a 3.0 and took my cat off a run a flow master super 44 with a turn down and it sounds great but the smell is awful! def. in the drive thru its terrible

 

depends on where you live, how much you care, and is it on/off or just off road./


stock cat- with cherry bomb turbo with 2.5 piping dumped behind the cab sounds good.

I've ran no cat with a cb glasspack

had flowpro's , prosound etc.

stock cat- afte burner warlock muffler, then changed it around cut off the cat put the warlock in place ran the pipe back out near the wheel. and uncapped it once i got to the parks or out on country roads.

next setup. thinking purple hornies or cb glass packs, mangaflow hifl cat, and dual stacks with cap's on them. coming right up the outta sides of my flatbed.

 

If you want the best of both worlds, do what i did, core half of it. I started drilling with one of those spade drill bits (dont remember the actual name) till i hit the space in between the two "filter" sections. Then i hit the cat on the ground about 400 times with the cored side down to knock all the "filter" that you didnt drill out. This gets rid of the smell but is still very loud. You definitely need a muffler behind it though.
