Fuel from Charcoal Canister

Kid of a new-be here. I have an 86 runner that my brother-in-law helped me work on. Drove it home (3 hours) last week. Truck did great. Came home from work and then picked up my son, maybe 30 minutes of driving. When I turned the runner off, I noticed a leak. After inspection, it is gas coming out of the hose on the bottom of the charcoal canister. What would cause this, how to fix it??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One more tidbit, not sure if it is this simple, but removed the gas cap and it released a good amount of pressure.

You don't have your vacuum hoses hooked up properly somewhere or got some missing.

Been driving it for a while. After the 3 hour drive home over a week ago it has been my daily driver. minimum of 30 minute drives with no issue until now. Will recheck vacuum hoses, but I believe everything is where it is suppose to be. Any other thoughts?

O.k. Checked Vacuum and all are where they are suppose to be.

pulled charcoal can. Blew air in gas line. None out vacuum port, minimal out drain. Think canister may be bad. Checking junk yards for a replacement.

Check the gas cap, it should be a vented cap, if its not then its the wrong gas cap.

Lines are hooked up just like on yota4runna pic. Vacuum hose is sucking. Gas Cap is vented type. I left the gas cap off today when I drove it. Helped, minimal drip if any. Canister or gas cap? Any other thoughts? Thanks for the input so far.

When mine was doing this I had someone else look at it and the hoses were not hooked up properly in the engine bay. In the pic about the top back tube does not have a hose on it.

Do the lines off the top of the cannister go where they are supposed to go? That makes a difference too.

Waskilly, yes the lines on top do go where they are suppose to. Would the vacuum port being blocked couse gase to leak out the tube on the bottom. I am leaning towards a bad canister, but am very limited in knowledge so it is just a guess right now

All I can tell you bud is that mine was doing the same thing and I took it to my mechanic and he said the hoses in the engine bay were hooked up wrong so the system couldn't vent as it should and was backfeeding through the charcoal cannister.

Yes it can. The way the canister works is that gas fumes collect in the charcoal when engine is off. Then when engine is running, vacuum from the engine sucks in fresh air (via the bottom hose) through the charcoal to purge the gasoline fumes from inside the canister and suck them into the engine to be burned with the rest of the fuel. The FSM lists a thorough test and cleaning procedure for the canister, I followed it to test and clean the canister on my '85.

Thanks 4crawler. I did the check and clean method according to an 88 or 89 FSM since I do not have an 86. Was suppose to get air out the vacuum port and vent line without restriction. Air only came out vent tube and was restricted. Tried the clean method which did not help. Will pick up another canister soon. Right now I have the gas cap off and it seems to help. Guess I will figure out why my reverse lights stopped working while I look for another canister.

So I just bought a 94 Toyota pickup with the V6 3VZ-E engine. I was changing the spark plugs and plug wires. While doing this I had to remove the charcoal canister to get cylinder #6 plug into the head properly. As I did this I noticed that the tube coming off the bottom of the canister wasnt connected to anything. So my question is, where does that tube go and what does it connect to, if anything at all, or is it the vent for the canister?

That is the fresh air inlet to the cannister:

When the engine vacuum is sucking in the captured gas fumes, you need some fresh air to flow through and pull the fumes out of the charcoal.

You might have the tubes reversed on the tank side. When I moved the tank to the rear, it was reversed and gas was coming out the charcoal canister when it got hot. Reversed the line fixed it.
