I bought a LUK 16-057 clutch kit, and it came with two different release bearings, and one is taller than the other. The taller one is a NACHI 40TRBC07-27SB, the shorter one is an NSK 4OTKDO1, and the old one that I removed is a BCA J-01576.

I already put the taller one on the hub before I noticed that there was another one sealed up in the main wrapping with the disk and pressure plate. The taller one was in its own wrapper outside of that. The top of this taller one sits at least a quarter inch above the surface of the hub when installed.

The shorter bearing looks like it would end up being closer to flush with the surface of the hub, and this bearing looks closer in size to the one that I removed, but it's been so long since I took the old one off that I can't remember how close to flush that one was.

Which one is correct for my '88 22re 5-speed 4wd?

doesn't one of the new throwout bearings look like the old bearing?

do the pressure plates look the same?

Do you still have the old bearing ??

It is the size of the bearing not just where it sits on the hub .


Then one never knows just what hub might be in your truck unless you bought it from new and did all your own work.

I have 3 or 4 different clutch release bearing hubs that came out of Toyota 4x4`s

The answer is the one that works for your truck

Most likely that kit works on something else so is just packed with the two bearings

Go with the one as close to the one you removed

I haven't compared the pressure plates yet, but the pilot bearing was exactly the same.

I have the old bearing, but the inner and outer race separated when I removed it, so it doesn't look exactly like it used to. The new bearing that's shorter seems the closest in size.

I just watched a youtube video of a guy with the exact same truck as mine, and it looks like he used the bigger one, but I don't know how our hubs compare in exact measurements.

I managed to put the separated races of the old bearing back together with a BFH, so now I can clearly compare them all.

The old bearing had a bit of a sleeve extending below the inner race, so it sits at the same height on the bearing as the larger, thicker, new bearing. The other smaller, new bearing doesn't have that sort of sleeve, so it would sit lower on the hub, which leads me to think that the larger bearing is the best match.

that is interesting... as i recall, my throwout bearing was secured to the arm that went into the bellhousing with spring clips(???), and i don't see that capability with the two bearings on the left... is there a piece missing?

also compare the arms on the old vs. new pressure plates, that the throwout bearing rides on.

The bearing gets pressed onto the hub, and the bearing on the right is already pressed onto the hub.

There are little clips that retain the hub to the clutch fork.

The new pressure plate looks the same, just that the dowel holes are a hair too small to fit over the dowels, but everything lines up and is dimensionally the same.

there aren't any arms on your old throwout bearing, to fasten the clips to.

The hub is what has the arms on it. The old hub that I'm reusing is pictured on the right as currently installed on one of the new bearings. It was previously installed on the old bearing, the one in the middle of the photo.

i think that i must have gotten confused somewhere in the first post, because you repeatedly said "one" when you should have called it what it was, "bearing", lol
