regearing question

Hi all,

I wanted to confirm my thoughts on regearing my truck with you all before I make any purchases. (And before anyone tears my head off for not searching I already did that.)

I have an 88 4runner, 22re, 5spd running 33's on what I believe are stock gears. It moves but seems a bit slow so I want to run 4.88's. Now, from searching around I understand the cheapest way to do this is to find a pair of used third members from a 92-95 3.0 automatic as they had 4.88's stock and will bolt right in. Am I right on this? Are those the only years? Is that just 4runners or did trucks have the 4.88's as well?

My other question (and this is where I couldn't find much info) is if it is okay to get these parts from a truck with the automatic disconnect system. (my truck is manual.) I found one post saying you had to swap the "tube" but no one confirmed that and I haven't seen any other posts. Also, it seems like I can only find trucks with the AAD right now. Did they even make automatics with manual hubs?

Thanks for any advice,

Andy

Should be any automatic (truck or 'runner) that came from the factory with 31's. A lot of the 31's seem to have been dealer installed, and have the "regular" gears.

First, being we are at altitude, I would HIGHLY recommend 5.29's ... I have 4.88's with a V6 (and admittedly A LOT more weight) and wish I was 1 step lower EVERY time I go over a pass.

You have to remember that the 4.88 rear third is not regearable. If the ring/pinion break or you decide to go to larger tires in the future, you're pretty much screwed.

As for the front chunk, you can use an ADD diff, but you'll have to defeat the ADD and lock the shift yoke in the "engaged" position.

Oh I hadn't heard that about the 4.88 rear third. That's good to know.

I might just keep my thirds and have 5.29's installed. It sounds kinda nice for climbing all the hills we have around here... And highways are not a problem if you have 33s and you're geared that low, right?

you can go up hills on the highway in fifth gear its amazing. I can go up most of highway 17 (for those familiar with central cal) in fifth gear with 33s and 5.29s. Its also nice on the trail when your letting off throttle to gain traction and not dig and when you let off your not in instant no power mode.

What did you notice mpg-wise going to 5.29s/33's. Can you also describe your driving style, terrain (on road, ie: big hills, little hills, flat).

Well I think I get from 22-25mpg. I really top out at 65mph ish .

Since the Tps is pressure based I sit on the freeway pushing my throttle about [ ] that much and maintain speed thats where those mpgs come in I think.

Up big hills that have no turns I can usually go up in fifth with a bit of a running start. Anything like a pass however that several miles of steep winding im as screwed as everyone else because my ifs is bent up and hates sharp turns. Small hills I can actually gain speed going up in fifth (amazing)

In traffic im usually using second yet its still not so low that I use second to start going from a complete stop (even tho I can)

Its pretty easy on your clutch too. I can put the clutch out in first with no gas and the truck goes with no hesitation (on flat).
