I have a 22re manual stock 4:10s, Im gonna go with 4:88s cuz i plan to put 33s under it. i found a ring and pinion set from frontier4x4.com i was gonna buy that and try to do it myself. but if you think swappin out the differentials is a better idea, does it matter what year 4runner they come off of?

they come off 91-95 V6 4runner automatics with 31 inch tire package . should be able to find a used set for $300 - $400.

Check the door jam sticker for the gear codes.
G292 = 4.10 2 pinion
G254 = 4.56 4 pinion
G144 = 4.88 4 pinion

I can never remember the stock 4.30 gear code.
I got my set of 4.88 (yet to be installed) for $140 for both at Pick and Pull.
It helps to be there a lot. It took me almost a year to find a set.

Quick question about this one.
Is it just those years that the gear would in our 89-95 pickups or can the later 4runner gear fit too? Such as the 96 and above.

Just want to throw this out there:

Its not easy to set up your own gears correctly. Its not impossibly hard, but this isn't a quick and dirty easy modification.

Tools you absolutely must have:

Dial indicator with a mag base with .001" resolution.
Good in/lb torque wrench that reads accurately at 5-20 in/lbs
Bearing splitter
Calipers with .001" resolution.
Spanner tool for adjuster nuts on the carrier bearings (can be built)

Tools that are REALLY handy, since you'll be completely assembling and dissassembling the diff several times:

12 ton Press min. 20 is better
BIG cheater bars, and some serious guns if you install a crush sleeve. If you do a solid spacer its more time consuming, but works better in the end. Just more shimming.

Reusing old bearings=bad plan. Get new ones.

A good gear install and a bad gear install are almost indistinguishable at first. 50000 miles later is when things can go really bad if the gears were done incorrectly.

Exactly. A bearing splitter is actually a necessary tool. Adding that to the original post. Also adding the spanner and a set of calipers.

Thanks for posting this. Not all V6 auto 4runners came with 4.88s as some believe- even with the 31" tire option. Mine had the G254 code- 4.56

im hijacking this thread http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_Enyf67KTsi did this method of calculating my ratio but with one difference one wheel on the ground because i have open diffs. i got 1.95 in the rear and 2.27 or 2.28 in the front. this confuses me greatly. i have a 90 4runner 4x4 shouldnt i have atleast 4.10's? am i doin it wrong? does this method work with open diffs? i was investigating the weird issue that i was having while in 4x4 the rears would turn faster than the fronts so i figured id calculate the diffs and match the one that was tallest. but now im thinking on replacing both. i have 33's on the t4r now. i hear 4.88 or 5.29's. any light shed would be greatly appreciated.

today I rebuilt my 7.5 front diff on my tacoma... it took ten hours from start to finish. This does not include removal or installation of the diff. I do have some experience in this field (I fix tugboats for a living) and its not the easiest fix. for the record I installed 5.29s and a tru trac locker. good mechanical ability and specialty tools required.
